Cooking with Elvis is a domestic play that is both farcical and upsetting. Mam and Jill live together in an uneasy calm. Jill is overweight and a fiendish cook who whips up one exotic dish after another. Her father (and Mam's husband) is stuck in a wheel chair as the result of a stroke. He can neither speak nor move, but he can hear. He was a famous Elvis impersonator and from time to time steps out of the wheel chair in a series of fantasy scenes to give stirring renditions of some of Elvis's most famous hits. But Mam brings into the house a new young lover whose presence in the house become the source for hilarity and big time trouble. The ending is a deadly one, you can be sure. The play has been compared to the early black farces of Joe Orton. Also included in this volume is Bollocks!, Lee Hall's contemporary version of the Expressionist German playwright Ernst Toller's Hinkemann, which has been updated from twenties Bavaria to contemporary Tyneside.

Twisted and Poignant

I do not own this book but I had the opportunity to see the North American premiere of Lee Hall's irreverent play "Cooking with Elvis" in Provincetown, MA during the summer of 2001. Lee Hall may be best known for writing the script to "Billy Elliot," but this play shares little in common with "Billy Elliot"'s relatively straight-forward narrative.
It's been a few years since I've seen the play, but I'll try to give a synopsis since Amazon doesn't really have any useful information. The action centers on a former Elvis-impersonator who was paralyzed in an accident. He cannot speak at all and he is wheelchair-bound. The toll his infirmity takes on his wife and daughter is the play's main subject matter, but at various moments during the course of the play we are also privvy to the comedic fantasies trapped inside the father's mind. In the production I saw, he leaped out of his wheelchair to give a rousing rendition of "Suspicious Minds." And he actually looked like 70s era Elvis. Just brilliant.
This is really a play that should be seen. It will definitely surprise you. However, since it's not exactly the most mainstream and popular stage production, you might have trouble finding a current run. If you are a fan of off-beat contemporary theater, it is worth checking out.
As for the other reviewer who has posted here, it should be obvious he's just wanking off. That's just my perspective, though. I'm only a kid, after all.

Brilliant

Halls cookbook is wonderfully laid out. The pictures are sharp and detailed and the instructions are clear. However, I only gave four stars because when, as a Master chef, I sent one of my trainees to get the required ingredients for the meal, she came back crying stating that the Supermarket assistant laughed when she asked which aisle Elvis was in. Needless to say, I didn't ask her if she had any joy with my bollocks.
Still, his other book, "Sauces made from semen" was a real winner.
