Jean Rhys once again paints a depressing world

Author Jean Rhys knows how to write about dislikable folks. Wow, this story is chock full of ugly characters, namely the heroine herself. The story is well told wrapped in a dour and sour world and it moves along. Strange but I did enjoy the story but it just never moved from point A to point B. It just stayed put the whole time. If you don't mind a book where the ending feels like the beginning and you enjoy the author's style of writing full of cynicism, I'd recommend it. I certainly enjoyed her "Wide Sargasso Sea" and "Quartet".

It is 1923, Julia Martin is 36 and past her prime. She has lived by her looks; kept by men. But now Mr. Mackenzie has left her. She has no money, no prospects. What will become of her? In spare prose that cuts as sharply as a laser, Jean Rhys brings to life the ghastly loneliness and hopelessness of Julia, and all those women like her who at a time when women had few opppportunities, lived by their looks, snaring husbands if they were lucky or just lovers who care for them for a time. Rhys says more in ten carefully placed words than most other writers do in ten pages. This short novel is a masterpiece of concision and stands beside Kate Chopin's, 'The Awakening' as a brilliantly perceptive look at the plight of women. Highly recommended.

Good Information, Lax Editing

The author has done an admirable job in encapsulating the essence of owning a parakeet. There is good information here for those who may never have considered owning a budgerigar (parakeet). Reading through the rather brief volume, however, I found a disturbingly-conservative approach which suggests that the supposedly-low maintenance bird is actually a lot of work (with an almost Victorian cleaning routine and overly-cautious advice to pre-screen even branches brought in from outside for the cage). The author seems to welcome bird ownership but wants to warn prospective owners of the constant perils and responsibilities. It's a bit disorganized in approach, despite the division of chapters and sections.

The point of view of the author is full of unintended contradictory information, though this isn't flagrant. I was shocked to find an e-mail-grade typo in one of the early chapters. True proof-reading requires more than a spell-check run-through. Additionally, the book should be divided between those who have children in the house and those who do not.

Furthermore, there is far too little information here about taming birds and different scenarios which may inform various methods.

The appendix is filled with expired URL's - about half of which now point to Web hosts.

In summary, though this is a good volume, I get the impression the author was hurrying to get it to press without making sure it was perfect or at least better-organized. Somehow, even the sale price of $6.99 (Kindle price) seemed a tad high, given the editing this volume. I expected better and certainly more.

Quick, easy read that is very helpful

I have had parakeets before but I clearly did a lot of things incorrectly. This was a very easy and informative read that brought me up to speed on what needs to be done to help give these little birds a healthy and productive life. I was happy to learn some of the things I am doing right. I now know what fruits and vegetables to feed these birds but in the week I have had them they seem to have no interest in anything but seeds. I will keep working on them because I want to have them for a very long time. This book is a great reference for a non-expert just adopting a parakeet for the first time and should be read before such a purchase is made.

Lots of easy to understand information

As someone who thought they would never own a bird I was clueless when I was given a baby parakeet from a friend. I needed a crash course to figure out how to not kill my new pet. This book gave a great crash course in how to correctly care for and protect my parakeet, as well as a lot of very interesting tid bits on how to train and entertain my new family member.

Great addition to any Office Library

This book is a useful tool for any accountant who is new or very experienced with excel. The format is very straightforward and provides useful examples from organizing lists to more complex macros and scenarios. Most importantly it has chapter about using excel and quickbooks, making this book a great addition to any office library.

I am an accountant, and i think the book explains well the most essential tools of Excel. I would like though to read more on simple VBA exercises like creating a simple customized data entry form. I think this would have added value to the book.

Great Excel help book

One of the best things about this book is that you can download the material from a website rather then a cd. This is very convenient and allows you access to the information even if you purchase the book used. Also, it provides trick and other useful information regarding excel and how to use the tools in a day to day fashion. You do not need to be an accountant to use this book. It is written in plain English and is easy to follow. Conrad Carlberg is amusing and gets to the point, which are two items important to have in a "This is how you can do it" book. In order to get everything out of this book you need to DO IT. Have the book by your computer and follow what he is showing you step by step. Make sure you download the information from his website rather they just copying what it says from the book. You will save time and appreciate the lessons.

About the Author
Peter Dahlgren is Professor of Media and Communication Studies at Lund University, Sweden. He has also taught at Stockholm University, as well as Queens College and Fordham University in New York City, and has been a visiting scholar at several other universities. He is the author of many articles and author or editor of several books, including Television and the Public Sphere (1995) and Young Citizens and New Media: Learning for Democratic Participation (2007).

I ordered this book used. Was told it was in good condition. I was also told it would be 14 days before I received it. The book arrived today 7 days after I ordered it. It is in EXCELLENT condition the spine of the book isn't even cracked...I am so happy with my purchase I could giggle.
