This is a very good place to begin a journey into the very interesting and more and more important topic of this era, examples are showing up all around us, we are using this technology to aid us in our performance, but do not let the title fool you, as you well know, you will be confronted with some very powerful and complex thinking, but again as the title implies, you will walk away with a good comprehension of this ever so more important field

Waste of money

This book requires that you are (or become) familiar with both R and Python languages. The book is poorly organized and many results are stated rather than shown. If you are interested in an introduction to machine learning, take the FREE course given by Andrew Ng from Stanford (one of the world's experts) on Coursera. By the third week, you will be far ahead of the content in this book.

Very serious, fundamental book. May be too detailed if you are not going to the field for life. Every fellow going to pulm-crit should read it so you don't look stupid in the eyes of your RTs. Unfortunately some of ICU attendings have never seen this book too. Once again, it gives you strong fundamentals and as much details as you can absorb. Practically Mechanical Vents for dummies!

I waited until the very last minute to order this book (3 days before the first day of class)! I was offered a free subscription to Amazon Student which has the same great perks as Amazon Prime. I ordered it Friday night and it was on my doorstep Sunday night. I was so glad! I showed up to class Monday morning prepared. This book was a required text for my mechanical ventilation class. I have only gotten to chapter 8, but so far it is easy to understand. The book provides plenty of practice work and scenario questions. I found some other supplemental texts, but this book is much more concise.

The most helpful book I've found yet to help me remember Spanish verb meanings and conjugations.

Great book for anyone having trouble remembering Spanish verbs and their forms. Along with the pictures and key words to help you remember, there are exercises with each word to test yourself. Plus, at the end of the book there are numerous explanations about conjugating the Spanish verbs.

cute but iffy on the practicality

i bought this for my Spanish classroom thinking that mnemonic devices are helpful and fun for my students but the book includes some tricks that are great while others are too much of a stretch to be helpful. in retrospect, an entire book of mnemonic devices didn't really meet the needs of my Spanish 1 students. my favorite feature is the model sentences (where students fill in the blanks) and the charts that display the verb conjugated in both the present tense and preterit tense.

Cute book, good for beginner students

I purchased this book to help me teach verbs to a Spanish I class. So far, they do recall many of the mnemonic phrases especially the rhyming ones (e.g. Boone leaves the saloon), although the book does not contain as many verbs as I would like, and does nothing to help remember stem-changing verbs (besides listing the conjugations below the cartoon).
Even so, it's a good study aid and we have been using it whenever new verbs come up that are included in this book.

About the Author
C. Richard Johnson, Jr is the Geoffrey S. M. Hedrick Senior Professor of Engineering at Cornell University, where he has been on the faculty since 1981. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and co-author of Telecommunication Breakdown (2004, with William A. Sethares) and Theory and Design of Adaptive Filters (2001).

William A. Sethares is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author of Rhythm and Transforms (2007) and Tuning, Timbre, Spectrum, Scale (2005).

Andrew G. Klein is an Assistant Professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In addition to working in academia, he has also held industry positions at several wireless start-up companies.

Very Good Book For Learning Digital Radio

I like this book, very much. When I started to try to learn something about software (digital) radios the first two digital communications books I looked at were so mathematically intense, with what I thought was insufficient explanation, that I made little progress. Then I found this book. It's gentle and clear in its approach. This book contains plenty of mathematics, but the authors do not overwhelm the reader with page after page of equations (as is unfortunately common in so many engineering books). And the provided Matlab code is simply terrific in helping me learn digital radio. I also appreciated that the code listings were given, and explained, in the text of the book. That made for easy reading and improved my knowledge of Matlab. The authors introduce various digital radio topics, explain the topics rather well (in my opinion), and then provide the Matlab code to demonstrate those topics. Following that, the authors then provide suggestions to the reader on modifying the Matlab code so the reader can learn the effects of changing signal and processing parameter values. That's a VERY effective way to start learning software radio! While the book assumes you know something about digital signal processing (DSP), the authors do sufficiently explain the DSP topics as necessary. So if you're new to digital radio, and you have Matlab software available to you, I highly recommend this book because it is so down-to-earth and practical. Then, if need be, you'll be much better prepared to move on to the more complicated and mathematically-intense digital communications books.

Excellant book for first course in communications system design!

I felt compelled to write a review for this book! I have been in the wireless field for almost 20 years. I wish this book was available when I was studying in school since it would have helped immensely in my communications and DSP related courses.

It explains all the important receiver design concepts in a simple and logical way and the diagrams/matlab code supplement the text. The maths is not overwhelming especially for this subject matter.

This book would also be useful for wireless engineers in industry to brush up and fill gaps in their knowledge. The only reason I did not give this 5 stars is that it does not cover any wireless standard such as 2G/3G/4G. It would have been very useful to have a chapter or two showing how these principals are applied in the real world systems. Also, it would have been beneficial to have some information on non-linear modulation schemes, OFDM, MIMO and Wideband CDMA with the last three items being hot topics right now.

So in conclusion, the book would be very useful for advanced undergraduate students and for wireless engineers. It is supposed to be a first course but hopefully there can be a second edition or another book from the same authors that covers the more advanced topics mentioned earlier.

Great book on Software Defined Radio

Good to get started in Software defied Radio design. Can use Matlab or free Octave for the simulations. Hands on book that I can work through on my own. Would recommend to anyone studying SDR design. Most book examples run as is on Octave. Some need a change of function name or two. I wish this was available when I was studying digital communications 12 years ago.

The story was fulfilling, enjoyable and entertaining up until the end, which was frustrating due to hero and heroine stupidity.

STORY BRIEF:
Peter studied, courted and married three heiresses. The first two died under mysterious circumstances. The third is Rainie. He beat and abused her. She believes he plans to kill her, so she fakes her death and runs away using a false identity. She gets a job as a bookkeeper for Parker, a horse breeder on a ranch. When Parker discovers she lied on her job application Rainie believes she must run again. Parker guesses her circumstances and convinces her to stay on, even though she will not tell him any details other than her real first name.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
Most of the book was wonderful. I loved how smart and careful Rainie and Parker were. I loved how Parker slowly charmed Rainie over time. I loved how Rainie slowly began healing and did some other things that I don't want to give away as spoilers. One of my favorite parts was the role Loni played when she first met Rainie. As I was reading, I thought "I agree with two statements on the back cover of the book," "heartwarming, gently sensual" and "emotionally involving, family-centered, and relationship-oriented." I think a person who experienced an abusive relationship would find some healing comfort in this story. Parker is a perfect hero, gentle, loving, devoted, patient and also a strong protector.

A couple of times the book was a little slow, but during most of the book I had various good feelings. My problem was the end of the book. I was angry and frustrated at the stupid (and careless) things done by Parker, Raine, and the police. See Spoiler below.

CAUTION SPOILER:
I was angry at the police dispatcher for not believing that Rainie was in danger and wasting precious minutes making Parker justify why the dispatcher should send help. Then I was angry at Parker and Rainie for not informing everyone at the police station that there was a chance that a serial killer may be after Rainie and at least to be on alert for a phone call. A protective order had been issued against the killer, and it was a small police department. Everyone there should have known about it. Then I was angry at Parker and Rainie for the following. They make plans to get married. They meet with a Catholic priest who doesn't want them to live together before the wedding. Therefore, Rainie continues to live alone in her low-income apartment 30 minutes away. What happened to being smart? Peter is a psychopathic serial killer wanting revenge. At the least, Rainie could have stayed with Parker's father or sister (on their high-security ranches) for the time before the wedding. Because of that, the killer was able to get to Rainie. I wish the author had come up with a clever way for the killer to get to her even though she was being smart and careful. In Donna M's review, I loved her idea of using a body double as bait instead of Rainie. That would have been smart and interesting.

Well, for any Catherine Anderson fan, especially those fans of the Kendrick-Coulter-Harrigan series, this is a must read. That being said, I was disappointed in this book. It was certainly highly anticipated and no matter what I will continue to read all books by this author, but this one just didn't stand above the rest. First of all, the storyline was predictable and common, lacking any new elements to set it apart. I didn't really feel the love between the characters and Parker's immediate acceptance of Rainie's lies wasn't believable enough for me. The way he came to put two and two together was just a bit too convenient.

The story flowed well overall, and of course, it was great to catch up with our other favorites from the clan. It's just that on the whole this story lacked the "oomph" I've come to love from Catherine Anderson's books. Usually there is something unique about one character in each story and that's what sets C. Anderson's books apart from the pack and I just didn't feel it here. Rainie just seems like another battered wife who Meets Parker, another dashing cowboy.

So, as I said, for die hard fans this story is a must. For someone who is new to Catherine Anderson, definitely choose another book to start with. I recommend Baby Love or Phantom Waltz.

This beautiful and comic picture book stands as one of Briggs' finest achievements. A pop song in the nineties asked the famous question "What if God were on of us?" This book answers a different intriguing question - what if Santa Claus were just an ordinary bloke? In his inimitable careful style, Briggs follows Father Christmas through his ordinary routine on December 24th and 25th. Each page is a series of illustrative panels, rather like a comic book, though the artistic style is the same kind of fine color work Briggs used in "The Snowman." Many panels are silent, or else punctuated by our hero's curmudgeonly mutterings ("blooming chimneys!") Father Christmas is rudely awoken by his alarm clock on December 24th, in an ordinary semidetached home in England somewhere (this is a very British book.) He gets up, has breakfast, feeds the dog and cat, gets some presents from storage in the barn, hitches up a few deer, and is off through various kinds of weather to visit various kinds of homes, mildly complaining about his hardships the entire time. The humor of the book's tone grows on the reader as the story proceeds. At last he finishes his rounds at dawn and comes home to a most pleasant Christmas of a warm bath, a good meal, and some holiday brochures. Then we follow him up to bed. I reread this book every Christmas, with equal joy each time. It is funny in a slightly irreverent way, but it still captures the warmth and joy of a Christmas well spent. Kids may enjoy the comic book format of the story, but I think this book can be even better enjoyed by adults who can imbibe its full wit.
