stereotypical entertainment for churchgoers with a narrow comfort zone.

Well, the premise sounded funny. But this one doesn't really deliver much more than a protracted and repetitive series of sermonettes, as preached to a sometime prostitute who is so conveniently--and unbelievably--naive that most of the culture appears to have passed entirely over her head. If I'd been laughing more, I might have been okay with it--fictional characters are, after all, just that. But the humor never made it out of the back-cover copy.
If you are a church-raised person with no contact with anybody who has lived the street life, you might enjoy this view of a young woman who has been there. She's conveniently stupid when necessary but whip-smart as required. And you'll completely agree with all the concepts. So for those narrow circumstances only, the book reaches its mark. The rest of the reading population should probably pass, though.

Good quick read

I always enjoy reading any Kirk McGarvey book and this is no exception. I didn't notice that this is more of a novella than a full book until it ended very abruptly. It would help if you had read the other books in the series, although this book starts out with a good synopsis of what happened previously. I really look forward to reading the next full novel which coes out next month. You can't go wrong with a Kirk McGarvey book

Another good "Mac" book

I gave this one four stars, because unlike some of the earlier ones in this compelling series, the plotline seems straight and predictable, without the twists and turns and depth of characterization so like most of the others. A straightforward revenge story. However, still a good read, with interesting locales and more than enough tension to keep you wanting more. Recommended.

Sober and reasonably balanced (a bit more than 4 stars)

This book offers a reasonably balanced discussion of the WTO, especially from an historical, political point of view. The workings of the WTO are very much based on power politics, notwithstanding its ostensible one member, one vote constitution. Some of the topics I was impatient to hear discussed during the first three-fourths or so of the book, such as environmental issues, point of view of developing countries, "democracy deficit," etc., are dealt with in Chapters 6 and 7, so some patience is helpful.

I'd have certainly given this closer to 5 stars but for a couple of points: First, the analysis tends at times to be a bit too orthodox, and written from a US point of view. The underlying economics of free trade aren't questioned enough, and the "generativity" of the WTO dispute resolution mechanism -- its judicial lawmaking -- is underestimated. To be fair, one reason for that assessment may be that the book went to press before the 2006 panel decision on genetically modified organisms. Second, and more important in this context, it's a challenge to stay awake while reading this book. The analysis is usually written at a high level of abstraction. The literary style is quite leaden, with a real written-by-committee feeling. (The rather dense typography may exacerbate this impression.) The book could have used a more forcefully-stated point of view (notwithstanding the conclusions stated in the final chapter), or at least more piquant details and anecdotes from time to time. Although it covers a narrower topic and is itself quite dry and academic in literary style, Trish Kelly's "The Impact of the WTO" nonetheless manages to be a fun read by comparison. That's a very oblique compliment, to say the least. And although it does not go into the depth of the book under review, Amrita Narlikar's "Very Short Introduction" to the WTO from Oxford U Press is a much more vivid way to learn about the history and key issues, including WTO politics, if you're new to the subject.

Excellent study

This is a careful and thorough description of the evolution of the GATT/WTO system. It is aimed at readers who want to understand how the rules-based world trading system has evolved in the postwar period, and the roles of institutions and law in that process. It is less entertaining to read than the Paul Blustein book, Misadventures of the Most Favored Nations: Clashing Egos, Inflated Ambitions, and the Great Shambles of the World Trade System, but the two books are worth reading together.

Flawless In Content...Killer in Formatting

This is a fantastic book, filled with great advice. I almost didn't give it 5-stars because of the poor formatting, but why create the karma. : ) If anyone at Shakti's publishing firm is reading this, much of the text appears squished together on a Kindle Fire. Much of the wording has no space between them, which makes it difficult to get through. It's probably that it was formatted way back when, before eReaders were really popular. It's to the point where at times you can't even read sections. But I obviously chugged through it because of the powerful messages. That says something about this book!

Ok. Like I said for my review of Sing earlier in the year, sometimes you just want to read an entertaining book about a famous singer and all of the associated ups and downs that come with being in the spotlight. The Way Back Home is absolutely that book.

Alecia Whitaker brings us back into country singer Bird Barrett's world, where she's about to go on her first national tour. Her second album is skyrocketing in the charts, and Bird decides to bring along brother Dylan and best friend Stella to help out, as she hits stages across the country.

However, romance, new tour mates and some publicity snafus, help ensure that this is a tour that Bird isn't likely to forget...

It was a little surreal reading The Way Back Home, because it just happened to be released during the middle of the Taylor Swift/Kim Kardashian snapchat storm. And as I've always seen Bird as the fictional equivalent to Taylor, it felt a little meta.

But oddly enough, that meta aspect actually helped me empathize with Taylor, while I was joining Bird on her journey. Because Whitaker does a fantastic job of breaking down the stressors that come with being a skyrocketing success, and the various personal and professional struggles that come with said success.

Bird vacillates between enjoying the perks of her fame - her fans; the VIP access that she gets to clubs - but Whitaker also increasingly stresses the fact that Bird's life is also no longer her own. Her behavior needs to be moderated and contained each and every time she is in public, and Whitaker is so good at emphasizing how claustrophobic that type of expectation can feel. This is especially true, when Dylan and Stella begin dating publicly, and Bird realizes that she doesn't have the same luxury.

Alongside that claustrophia, is the underlying emphasis on the idea that the narrative of stars like Bird can be skewed for controversy and shock value. The latter half of the book deals with the stressors of public expectation and the subsequent fallout when that expectation isn't met, and Whitaker skillfully shows how straining it can be to have society place so much expectation on a single individual.

There's a specific section where Bird more or less hits her breaking point, and I wanted to stand up and cheer when Bird makes the life-saving decision to put her needs above everyone else's. Whitaker does a fantastic job of explaining why that isn't a selfish decision, and how asking for self-care is imperative. It's such an important lesson for young readers to learn, and I applaud Whitaker for going there.

While the book does have an adorable romance with familiar face Adam Dean, I almost felt like it was secondary to Bird's overall journey. There was so much emphasis on Bird's growth and recognition of her new status as a role model and a musical symbol, that all of her interactions with Adam seemed to just (re)emphasize that fact.

All in all, it seems fitting that as the third and final book in the trilogy, this is the book where Bird learns how to deal with her fame and personal life, in a way that ensures a successful career for years to come. So even though readers may not meet up with Bird again, it's not difficult to imagine her still out there, with a music catalogue that will span the ages.

Final verdict:

The Way Back Home is a heartwarming delight, and a perfect close to the Wildflower series. Bird Barrett has come full circle from burgeoning young talent to national star, while also learning many life lessons along the way.

Highly recommend, full stop.

Must Read for Doctors Looking for a Different Way

Rarely do physicians give up their keys to the "Doctor's Lounge" and descend into the trenches where patients hide out to heal from their illnesses and wounds - out of sight of the medical establishments charged to care for them. Dr. Ken Hamilton is one such physician. He gathered a group of patients who needed what was not being provided: support and a different way to heal when left with partial or no solutions from the medical world. And he did something remarkable. He "entered into relationship" with these patients. Together they created a model for a support group called H.O.P.E., and they now walk a common road together - a road called "healing."
I'm torn between recommending this as a book for patients or as a must read for doctors. Here's why. In this day, when malpractice insurers consistently tell physicians that the single most important thing they can do to stem the tide of lawsuits is to "improve their relationships with their patients," these physicians might do well to look to Hamilton as an example. Not all surgeons should sheath their scalpels as Hamilton did in order to participate more directly with patients in the healing process, nor would we expect them to. But every physician must weigh what "medicine" has cost him or her in terms of estrangement from patients they were once committed to serve, and the loss of a sense of Soul in medicine. They must balance it with whatever "gains" make it worth five minute blitz appointments. Perhaps they are caught between a high maintenance personal lifestyle and healthcare reimbursement systems that are strangling all of us - physician and patient alike.
So if you are a physician reading this review and are no longer satisfied with where you find yourself and your patients today, take the time to read "SoulCircling" by Hamilton. Suspend your judgments that your way is the only way and follow one physician's story and his results in truly partnering with patients. Meet your patients as people in the place called Soul. You may never return to practicing medicine in quite the same way.
