About the Author
Kathleen M. Galotti holds a B.A. in psychology and economics from Wellesley College, as well as an M.A. and a Ph.D. in psychology and an M.S.E. in computer and information sciences from the University of Pennsylvania. At Carleton College she holds the title Professor and Director of Cognitive Science, an interdisciplinary program, which she helped establish in 1989. She also is a former department chair of Psychology. She teaches courses in cognitive and developmental psychology and cognitive science, and has also taught courses in statistics and introductory psychology. Dr. Galotti is the author or coauthor of dozens of peer-reviewed studies in cognitive and developmental psychology. Her research centers on the development of reasoning and decision-making skills from the preschool period through adulthood and on the styles with which adolescents and adults plan for the future, make important life commitments, and learn new information. Her research has been funded through the National Science Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. She is the author of Making Decisions That Matter: How People Face Important Life Choices (Erlbaum, 2002), as well as a textbook, Cognitive Development: Infancy Through Adolescence (SAGE, 2011).

Ebook is horrible. It doesn't let you copy any of the text in case you want to quote the text in a paper. Doesn't allow any right clicks which includes using search. I could go on all day about the problems this ebook has, but basically I'm just saying DO NOT RENT OR BUY THIS EBOOK.

If you are thinking about renting a this book from amazon, I strongly advise against it. I rented a hard book copy of this book from amazon as well. It was falling apart. The binding was torn. The pages were torn and every page had tons of writing all over it. Basically the book was unusable. If this is the type of book you would like then rent it from amazon.

Assassination Bureau

London supposedly "wrote himself into a corner" in the plot of this story, or else he hadn't the time to finish it, but the resolution by Fish is not only an entertaining conclusion (despite a certain abrupt removal of a key character), but is so similar to London's writing style and his familiarities so that the author transfer is indeterminable. The best part of the book as a whole, as all Londonites will agree, is the simple philisophical dialogue exchanged between characters. For those who are seeking a die-hard, man vs. nature conflict, you still won't be disappointed with the primitiveness of the characters (philisophical, mad, and fanatic) and their interaction with a civilized world that doesn't quite match the truths that they hold to be dear. An excellent read.

I would compare it to Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday. Sometimes it seems like a silly game, at other times it's the answer to deep philosophical questions. You must suspend your belief a little and accept the premises. The Assination Bureau is based on certain rules. It tries to perform social rights by doing what could well be considered wrongs: executions of anti-social baddies. But there's a big difference between murder-for-hire (no matter how "justified") and capital punishment by a real government. Playing by the rules of the game, London sets up a clever situation where the organization must destroy itself to be true to its own principles. But as men of principle and reason they whole heartedly embrace their own destruction. Should rationality be held to be of a higher importance than life? Is playing by the rules more important than survival? When does rationality become irrational or irrationality look rational? Though not always convincing, this book asks and answers many interesting questions.

Morgan was a lawyer who became enthralled with the Iroquois as a grown man, as did many other men at the time, when Indians were seen as noble savages. (They would recite Hiawatha at meetings, for example.) He spent as much time as he could with Iroquois elders reconstructing their way of life. He was the first to record and undestand their kinship as part of their matrilineal descent groups or clans which would lead him to research for the Smithsonian on Native American kinship.Systems of consanguinity and affinity of the human family. His book on material culture served as a model for ethnography,Lewis H. Morgan on Iroquois Material Culture but his undestanding of social and political organization was even more important. His experience, plus the influence of Darwin, would lead him to construct the evolution of human society.Ancient society: or, Researches in the lines of human progress from savagery, through barbarism to civilization [ 1877? ] As the title suggsts, Morgan posed three major stages of social evolution, with three divisons in each stage. Savages were food collectors; barbarians were food producers, with civilization culminating in the Western World.
With his experience and all his writing, Morgan became regarded as the founding father of American anthropology, but lacking any students he is considered as an intellectual founder rather than the founder of the discipline, an honor that goes to Franz Boas.A Franz Boas Reader: The Shaping of American Anthropology, 1883-1911 (Midway Reprint)

Foundation for Study of the Iroquois League

I read this book for my Classic Ethnographies seminar at school. It is by far one of the most interesting ethnographies I have had the pleasure of reading. It combines ethnography with history and gives the reader a good overall view of the Iroquois. I can't recommend this book enough. If you only read one book on the Iroquois, this should be that book!

About the Author

John Foster is Director of the Museum of Moab in Moab, Utah. He served for thirteen years as Curator of Paleontology at the Museum of Western Colorado and adjunct faculty at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction. He has worked in Cambrian deposits in several areas of the western states, including California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, and South Dakota. He is author of Jurassic West: The Dinosaurs of the Morrison Formation and Their World (IUP, 2007).

Lots of fossils and a little bit of background

John Foster knows a lot about Cambrian fossils and wants to tell us about all of them, or as many as he can cram into this book. It's often simply too much. These trilobites were found here and those trilobites were found there. Each time with a short description, e.g. short spines, no facial sutures, etc.
It's not that I not interested in these fossils, otherwise I would not have bought a book titled 'Cambrian Ocean World'. And I definitely am interested in the predator Anomalocaris and, of course, the more recent very strange discoveries such as Banffia, Vetulicolia and Diania cactiformis (the walking cactus). These fascinate me. But I do wish Foster would explain more about the background. How the world was changing and why therefore were the animals. He does a bit of this right towards the end of the book but it requires a lot of stamina to get there.
There are a lot of pictures in this book, most of them small and in black and white. I didn't always find them very helpful. The color plates - very nice ones too - have all been put together in the middle of the book. So you have to keep flicking through the pages to follow any references. This compares poorly to the many, large color photographs and impressive artwork in the book "The Cambrian Explosion". That book is worth getting just for the pictures alone, even if it is aimed at an university undergraduates.
That said, 'Cambrian Ocean World' isn't easy on the reader either. It assumes familiarity with many technical terms such as glabella, pygidium or occipital ring, It's not all like that. Foster has visited many, perhaps all, of the places described and offers a vivid description of the scenery, sometimes including the odd anecdote.

I have mixed feelings about this book. A stronger focus on why things happen the way they do and fewer fossils lists would have been worth five stars.

Having read Gould's Wonderful Life years ago

Worth every penny of the cost! Having read Gould's Wonderful Life years ago, this was a reprise but much broader in scope and with newer findings/research. The mental image you develop of the Earth during those bygone eons is thrilling. Evolution is written big and wide, understandable and amazing. I will donate it to my local high school library. Hopefully some youngster will pick it up, be inspired and enlightened.

I recommend The Trilobite Book recently out too. The photographs of the fossils are spectacular!

Ever since reading Stephen J. Gould's "Wonderful Life" I have been fascinated by the lifeforms of the Cambrian "Explosion." The book is very detailed & scientific (not for kids). I skimmed the book to start with, & am now reading it in detail. Excellent.

Laurie Schneider Adams is Professor Emerita at John Jay College, City University of New York. Laurie Schneider Adams is Professor Emerita at John Jay College, City University of New York. At the Graduate Center she taught courses on Art and Psychoanalysis, Artists’ Biographies and Autobiographies, and the Italian Renaissance. She is the editor of the quarterly journal Source: Notes in the History of Art and the author of Art Across Time, A History of Western Art, The Methodologies of Art, as well as numerous other works.

Great textbook, a few caveats

I'm a university professor so I'm reviewing this from the P.O.V. of a teacher. If you want to learn about Renaissance art casually, I'm not sure this is the book for you: I'd recommend things like Brunelleschi's Dome and Ross King's other books. Laurie Schneider Adams writes simple and accessible textbooks. I've used her brick of a book "Art Across Time" for one art history survey class. In my opinion, that book is too watered-down to the point that some sections are really useful only for the pictures. (That's why I've only used it for a single class.) This book is stronger. LSA is a Renaissance specialist so she has more to say here that is interesting and substantive. The prose is clear, the book is well-illustrated, and for an undergraduate intro class I think this book works really well. It is a particularly good back-up to lecture. That said, I think of this book as a baseline for a good class on Renaissance art. I recommend assigning a pretty wide variety of supplementary readings in order to provide a fuller picture, much more so than I would in a survey class (aka "Caves to Cathedrals" or whatever). So: good starting point here (good enough for five stars), but not enough for a university class.

In his first book, industry veteran Verdino argues that the gold standard in advertising is no longer the Superbowl spot, but rather DIY viral efforts aimed at generation-Y. Urging companies to "market smarter," Verdino describes how Proctor and Gamble spent millions in a failed attempt to launch an online brand of personalized cosmetics while an unknown make-up artist turned how-to videos on YouTube into a successful partnership with Sephora. Authenticity is key, and large companies are jumping on the brand wagon, developing ingenious methods of connecting with this coveted consumer group. Ford Motors, for instance, hoping to make the Fiesta cool to this generation, loaned the cars to 100 young social media mavens as a means of "building evangelism, generating buzz, and sparking a movement" (drivers were required to compete in themed challenges, like poetry slams and star sightings). It's an interesting glimpse into the persuasive forces of constant contact, and an up-to-the-microsecond guide to new media marketing, but in Verdino's world, every relationship has commercial potential; the idea that there might be a pure human interaction seems never to have occurred to him. microMARKETING Offers Refreshing Look at Online Communications

It's been about two years since I published a book review about online or social media marketing. Generally, while many friends have had their turn at the plate and I know their books have great helpful ideas and content, there tenants have had an element of redundancy, and I could not finish them (and I only review if I've read half of the book).

Greg Verdino`s microMARKETING offers a different experience with new, refreshing looks at online communications. In my mind, while it offers many of the tenants his contemporaries espouse, the book has new, exciting approaches and tenants. I actually found the book's style and approaches (do many small things well and Greg's view of earned media) inspiring, and caused me to rethink a couple of my own projects.

Case in point, the 7th Son case study in Chapter Eight was just fantastic. As someone who has published business book with a second in the works, but also has two novels almost contracted with publishers I could not help but absorb every detail. The case study made me resolve to re-edit one of the novels, and publish it independently (gasp) using social tools to promote.

This book is full of case studies like that, from Laura Luke and Sephora to the Dancing Man, as well as few social media mainstays that you'll be familiar with. In addition, the book offers seven principles of microMARKETING that are well explained and a series of questions in the final chapter to turn the quick read into a learning lesson for your organization.

I tend to lock onto great sound bites, and this one resonated so well with me, you can expect to see it in Welcome to the Fifth Estate (location 1172 on Kindle):

When a company attempts to interrupt the stream, the stream is bound to shift course, or simply flow around the interruption. The Keys to the Social Marketing Kingdom

DISCLOSURE: I was the indexer for this book, but this review is unsolicited by the author. I do regular write-ups/reviews of my book projects on my blog once a month.

Micromarketing is a real must-have for anyone who wants to integrate their marketing ideas into the new virtual, niche world we all live in. I'm keeping my copy to help me market some personal poetry and essay stuff I'm doing. The mass market simply doesn't exist as a usable target, which is good for us little guys. The idea is to recruit social networking folks (called "micromavens") and basically take word-of-mouth to a whole new level of impact. Viral is the operational goal for any new product or service, but you better provide value, because your ongoing relationships with your mavens and through them the rest of your prospective clientele, depend on it. But you don't need a huge advertising budget (in fact ads are a bit outre in this world) to create success. It's pretty amazing. Power to the micros! Verdino has a very straightforward and engaging style for explaining his ideas, with lots of real/virtual-world examples to illustrate. And I've already printed out the last chapter, which is a fill-in-the-blank checklist to use in developing my own micromarketing campaign.

Great premise, great book. This isn't just another business book. It's not about the framework that will solve all your challenges or the latest and greatest business process. Greg is a prolific blogger and a fantastic presenter and it shows. Easy to read, featuring refreshingly new and human case studies, this is a must read for anyone sick of the same old talking points and ready for inspiration.
