Excellent and very beneficial reading.

The section Why this book was written says Stephen Covey appropriately said "To Understand something is to understand its opposite". Well, Kirk certainly did an excellent job of explaining the current payment system. But this was merely the beginning since the book is about Bitcoin and how much useful can it be for a business to leverage the payment system that comes with it. Not just the why but the what and how. What are the tools and services available for those interested in it and what's some of the legislative and tax environment pertinent to it.

Evolution of Strategic Management Theory

Implanting Strategic Management is a compilation of a life-timework that organizes the major contributions in the field under oneumbrella, as Ansoff ingeniously develops a model that divides the competitive environment into five levels of turbulence: 1) repetitive, 2) expanding, 3) changing, 4) discontinuous and 5) unforeseen. His strategic success theorem states: For optimal success of an organization, the strategic aggressiveness (both technological and marketing) and the components of capability (both managers and organizational climate, competence and capacity) must match the level of environmental turbulence in which the organization competes. Ansoff uses a five-point integral scale to also measure the corresponding five levels of strategy: 1) stable, 2) reactive, 3) anticipatory, 4) entrepreneurial and 5) creative and the corresponding five levels of capability: 1) custodial, 2) production, 3) marketing, 4) strategic and 5) flexible, as he develops a strategic diagnostic questionnaire to obtain the perceptions of the general managers of any organization. When there is alignment or minimal gap between the average level of competitive environment and each of the components of strategy and capability, then the organization should have optimal success, which has been validated by several doctoral dissertations under Ansoff. This book is a comprehensive integration of several of Ansoff's scholarly articles, enhanced with each edition. Well thought out concepts involving strategic segmentation, resistance to change, optimizing strategic portfolio, strategic dimensions of technology, societal strategy issues, real-time strategic response to managing surprising changes, strategic issue management,and environmental surveillance for strong signals and weak signals in anticipating environmental change. Ansoff's theory says that at levels 1 to 3, a firm can extrapolate the future from the past. However, at level 4 (discontinuous) and level 5 (surpriseful), strategic management must be used by an organization to realistically plan for future successes in a highly turbulent competitive environment. Ansoff's theory applies to all types of organizations, and he explains how industries can have unexpected shifts from one level of turbulence to another, as in the case of Apple Computer Corp. When Apple created the personal computer, it also created a whole new marketplace with new customers at an initial turbulence level of 5, which shifted to a level 3 of marketing mentality, which seemed to be why Steve Jobs, a creative visionary, was replaced by Scully, a marketing guru, as the Board wanted to milk their "cash cow" and not be continuously creating new dimensions. However, when the environment shifted up to level 4, Apple almost went out of business when they did not respond fast enough. Level 4 is discontinuous, where the future is only partially predictable from the past, and it requires 4) entrepreneurial strategy and 4) strategic capability of the firm for optimal success. Steve Jobs was brought back in as interim CEO, and he was able make Apple once again competitive by enhancing the company's technological and marketing strategy, as well as its organizational capability, by bringing the firm's strategy and capability components up to level 4, so as to be successful. (Note: The above scenario is used by the reviewer as a realistic example of Ansoff's theory being applied in the real world.) In summary, Ansoff's work is far beyond anything published in the field, and one of the most comprehensive empirical studies that validates his complete theory is called "The Financial Performance of Technology-Driven Firms Aligning Strategy, Capability and Environment" by Richardson, John F. 1996. (Ann Arbor, MI: UMI No. 9623859), 564 pp. This reviewer recommends Ansoff's book Implanting Strategic Management to any individual who desires to learn from the top scholar in the field, considered by many world authorities as the "Father of Strategic Management." This reviewer has read numerous works by the leading scholars in the field, and nobody has integrated the various contributions under one umbrella or into one paradigm, as Ansoff has done. Scholars come from all corners of the world to study under Ansoff and his disciples at United States International University, San Diego, California, USA. When is America going to wake up and learn from this "latter-day saint" of strategic management, while he is still with us? We ignored Demming, considered the "father of quality management," for years until he became infamous in Japan, teaching the Japanese firms how to dominate world markets with quality management. Implanting Strategic Management is a compilation of a life-timework that organizes the major contributions in the field under oneumbrella, as Ansoff ingeniously develops a model that divides the competitive environment into five levels of turbulence: 1) repetitive, 2) expanding, 3) changing, 4) discontinuous and 5) unforeseen. His strategic success theorem states: For optimal success of an organization, the strategic aggressiveness (both technological and marketing) and the components of capability (both managers and organizational climate, competence and capacity) must match the level of environmental turbulence in which the organization competes. Ansoff uses a five-point integral scale to also measure the corresponding five levels of strategy: 1) stable, 2) reactive, 3) anticipatory, 4) entrepreneurial and 5) creative and the corresponding five levels of capability: 1) custodial, 2) production, 3) marketing, 4) strategic and 5) flexible, as he develops a strategic diagnostic questionnaire to obtain the perceptions of the general managers of an any organization. When there is alignment or minimal gap between the average level of competitive environment and each of the components of strategy and capability, then the organization should have optimal success, which has been validated by several doctoral dissertations under Ansoff. This book is a comprehensive integration of several of Ansoff's scholarly articles, enhanced with each edition. Well thought out concepts involving strategic segmentation, resistance to change, optimizing strategic portfolio, strategic dimensions of technology, societal strategy issues, real-time strategic response to managing surprising changes, strategic issue management,and environmental surveillance for strong signals and weak signals in anticipating environmental change. Ansoff's theory says that at levels 1 to 3, a firm can extrapolate the future from the past. However, at level 4 (discontinuous) and level 5 (surpriseful), strategic management must be used by an organization to realistically plan for future successes in a highly turbulent competitive environment. Ansoff's theory applies to all types of organizations, and he explains how industries can have unexpected shifts from one level of turbulence to another, as in the case of Apple Computer Corp. When Apple created the personal computer, it also created a whole new marketplace with new customers at an initial turbulence level of 5, which shifted to a level 3 of marketing mentality, which seemed to be why Steve Jobs, a creative visionary, was replaced by Scully, a marketing guru, as the Board wanted to milk their "cash cow" and not be continuously creating new dimensions. However, when the envirnoment shifted up to level 4, Apple almost went out of business when they did not respond fast enough. Level 4 is discontinuous, where the future is only partially predictable from the past, and it requires 4) entrepreneurial strategy and 4) strategic capability of the firm for optimal success. Steve Jobs was brought back in as interim CEO, and he was able make Apple once again competitive by enhancing the company's technological and marketing strategy, as well as its organizational capability, by bringing the firm's strategy and capability components up to level 4, so as to be successful. (Note: The above scenario is used by the reviewer as a realistic example of Ansoff's theory being applied in the real world.) In summary, Ansoff's work is far beyond anything published in the field, and one of the most comprehensive empirical studies that validates his complete theory is called "The Financial Performance of Technology-Driven Firms Aligning Strategy, Capability and Environment" by Richardson, John F. 1996. Scholars come from all corners of the world to study under Ansoff and his disciples at United States International University, San Diego, California, USA. When is America going to wake up and learn from this "latter-day saint" of strategic management, while he is still with us? We ignored Demming, considered the "father of quality management," for years until he became infamous in Japan, teaching the Japanese firms how to dominate world markets with quality management. Some of the best minds in the world come every year to study under Ansoff, but few Americans are in their numbers.

Many books are available about strategic managment. Authors such as Michael Porter and Peter F. Drucker, etc. provide the reader with an insight of many business problems. However, their solutions to solve complex problems in the business world seem to be simplistic, therefore, not sufficient.
Ansoff's approach is different. Complex business problems occurring in a global and especially volatile environment require specified or customized solutions. A business consultant or a graduate student will find a detailed roadmap to solve strategic management problems while reading the book.

Great book to improve my accent

I immigrated to the US when I was 30 years old. In the past 20 years, I have always tried to reduce my native accent in speaking American English. My job requires me to talk to customers on the phone, to host web meetings and to give presentations in front of a large group of audiences. I had taken different classes to improve my accent until I found the second version of this book. I was amazed by the techniques described in the book such as voice quality, ups and downs, and peaks and valleys. I signed up for an evaluation then enrolled in 6-months of classes provided by the author's organization. I greatly improved after I received direct feedback on a weekly basis. It has been a life changing experience after I had changed my voice quality in speaking American English. Before I came across this book, my native speaker friends always told me to speak slowly and to raise my voice volume particularly on the phone. Actually, it is not that at all. After I listened to all of the tracks on the CDs more than twice, gradually, I applied the techniques from the book in my daily communication. I have continuously received positive feedback from my audiences. I don't need to speak slowly and word by word. It was painful for native speakers to listen to me when I spoke that way.

As I am reading the third version, it has the outline of the techniques "The American Sound" in Chapter 1 on Page 1 and 2. It is the summary of the techniques in the book. This is a great book for whoever wants to reduce his first language accent in speaking American English. I got my money's worth from the book and the class.

The best for your american accent!

This book changed my life by changing my perception of the American Accent. After moving to the U.S. it became critical for me to communicate orally at a similar level as the native speakers. If you want to understand and be able to replicate how Americans speak English then you REALLY need this book. That is especially the case if you, like me, have spent (many) years reading and listening American English but not living in the U.S. This book will open your ears, yes your ears!

In several languages you can pronounce virtually everything right just by knowing how the words are written. As you may have noticed, that is not the case with American English. This book helps you to understand how it works and even, in general terms, why.

Don't think that the American English follows no rules or that you are unable to learn and use them. Here you will find examples to understand the patterns and exercises to practice and incorporate them into your everyday speech. The author clearly knows her subject and has extensive PRACTICAL experience teaching English as Second Language (ESL) to people with different language backgrounds.It shows in her explanations of how and why. Don't miss "The Miracle Technique"! nor how you can pronounce words and phrases the right way if you see them written the way they are said. It will blow you away!

Something funny is that just 1 week after I started reading the book and doing the exercises, people around me noticed the difference!

But make no mistakes, if you want to benefit from all what this book offers you need to take the time and effort to read/study the book and practice, practice, practice.

After having read and used for some time the 2nd Edition of this book I decided, for professional reasons, to take the 6 months program they offer online and via skype ([...]) and have no regrets. My instructor is very helpful and knowledgeable and it definitely makes a huge difference having someone guiding and correcting you as you improve your skills.

Living in a new culture and mastering a foreign language is an exciting journey. Since I found this book, I knew it would be my best companion here in the U.S.

I decided to update this review nearly 2 years later, as I can shed some light on some lingering questions, linguistically speaking :)

So, here goes. Two years later my biggest noticeable slip in the American accent remains the letter R, ah , my obstinate, unruly, AAAAAAAARRRR. Yep, I trill it. I know it's an alveolar flap really, but it slips in when I'm not noticing, that rogue rascal raining on my parade. (Ann would have added rambunctious, but that's too many R's ). I watch with stupidity as my 4 year old sails through "rainbows and gardens" then "رمل و بحر" without skipping a beat ( pronounced ramel and bahar, and they mean sand and sea, respectively)

Ah well, that's about it, really. I've retained or improved on -nearly- everything else:

Intonation is getting really good, pitch can still be a b*itch, liaisons are now decent, and the most striking example of further accent acquisition happened this morning . Someone was trying to sell me his lawn care service, over the phone, and I was trying to politely get rid of him. It's a Sunday, I'm standing outside an ICU room waiting to talk to family (I'm a doctor), and I wanna be done early today, ya know? Finally after the fourth no thank you from me, he hangs up. I hang up too, exclaiming " Jesus H Christ !!" One second later, I burst out laughing at this.

(On a more serious note, so CENTRAL is the R to all you Yanks that the "American sound " can be summarized in one self-repeating mantra : RhubarbRhubarbRhubarb∞! ( I use the term Yanks endearingly, by the way, and whenever I wanna tease my friend Steve)

One last thing : There are a couple of comments on my review from 2 years ago that I've been once or twice half-tempted to address, but very often the best answer is none at all, as I like to read these comments "for the lulz". Now's that's INTERNET-slang! Look! I use it and I'm still gainfully employed! Geez.

A few months after finishing a 6-month course with an instructor, and using the second edition of this book, a man asked me for directions at the place where I work. Without pausing, I said: "Whyncha come with me?"

I lead him to were he was going, and then it suddenly dawned on me how much my speech pattern had changed. A year ago, I would've said accurately but very stiffly why-don't-you-come-with me.

Accent training is more than just being able to produce individual words or discrete sounds; it's really the ability to combine words and phrases fluidly. I came to the US at the age of 24, and of course had an accent. Most speech pathologists/linguists agree that after a certain age, say 10, an acquired new language will retain "an accent", ie a different way of producing sounds. Six years later, I was determined to test this theory. I was never particularly bothered by my (Arabic) accent, and rarely was I not understood, but the project took a scholarly, almost serious, tone to it.

Would I be able to drop my accent? I had six months to find out, and I set a goal of attaining at least 95% perfection, meaning that my accent would deviate from a standard American accent less than 5% of the time.

I used the second edition of this book during my six month run, but also reviewed this third edition in its entirety when it came out, eager to find what changed in the science (yes, it is a science) of accent training/acquisition. Much is improved and expanded on in this book, but the main themes remain the same: Pronunciation, intonation, voice quality (better clarified in this third edition), and, my favorite, linking, also known as liaisons.

Different people will have different challenges. While I felt that I could produce many individual words perfectly and rarely had issues with stress or grammar, the production of whole phrases and the 'music' of the language itself with its accompanying nuances and staircase intonation etc etc , was my challenge. Phrases were broken; there was this choppy feel to how words were connected. It was fun listening to one's own accent change, and it did.

I took a Versant online/phone test on my own when I felt I was ready, and... scored a 76 out of a possible 80 in its pronunciation subset . (The test also has grades sentence mastery, vocabulary and fluency). That's an uncanny 95% (76/80). Should've aimed higher, haha.

Now just as one could misplay a piano piece and hit a note instead of another, one could do just the same and 'revert' to an old accent. I guess it takes many months, possibly years for the new accent to become fully ingrained. Here's a quick example: it took me a while to get to use "goda the park " rather than go-to(pronounce the to)-the park. And I'm told intoxication might make you speak in your original accent, but I digress.

Your words will "blend" together when you learn the American Accent. The exercises in this book are neat, supplemented by a fantastic audio track in 5 CD's. Self conscious? Pop 'em in your car's CD player.

(One unexpected thing I learned indirectly from this book is how people in different regions in the US speak differently, and I'm not even talking about the drawl of the southern accent or the distinctive Boston accent. I'm talking Chicago vs California! This'll all make you more aware of how words YOU make sound, and being able to change them accordingly.)

The third edition also expands on nationality guides, something I found very useful when analyzing the differences in my Middle Eastern accent. (Far-east speakers may have different challenging words/letters as opposed to say, Spanish speakers, or African. This'll allow you to focus on the anomalies)

So yes, you can change your accent, but you need to practice, practice, practice! The more you practice, the closer you'll get to it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it, even for those just curious to know something about the American accent.

Another great book from my fav designer!

I was excited to learn Carla has another sewing book to add to my collection! I'm a big fan of her E-book patterns, and this is a great collection of all sorts of hat patterns from different designers. Having the patterns available in downloadable PDF format is a great addition to my sewing library, I can print off only the size I need and reprint if needed, no flimsy tissue patterns! And because each pattern has multiple descriptive photos with the instructions, each one is a mini sewing lesson.

Well, she's done it again! Carla always has the most fabulous patterns - from the incredibly detailed instructions to the downloadable and printable patterns, they are hands-down the best I've used!

Let me tell you what I love about the downloadable patterns: you can print them as many times as you want - in any and all sizes you want! If it's a pattern I know I'll use over and over again (and trust me - Carla's patterns are ones that you'll want to use again and again!) I will print it on cardstock for extra durability. SO MUCH better than flimsy tissue paper patterns where once you cut the one size you need, the other sizes are useless unless you want to trace each size separately. Yuck! Who has time for that?

I am thrilled with all the options and variations that this book has to offer! Endless possibilities for adorable hats!

Fantastic book!

You can find the patterns at this address! [...] I love this book! No, it isn't cluttered up with a wad of folded tissue paper pattern pieces for me to unfold and sort out. The PDF pattern format is by far my preferred method of sewing. I can print out only the pieces I need, when I need them. I never have to worry about losing pieces or tracing pieces or only being able to cut out one size. I find it much easier to print a few sheets of paper and tape them together. If I lose a pattern, I can print a new one. The author Carla Hegeman Crim has been my favorite designer for many years now. Her instructions are clear and thoughtful and so easy to understand. This book has so many options of fun hats to make. I look forward to years of hat making ahead of me!
