Signal vs. Noise in Book Form

One of my biggest gripes about the early reviews to come out about Rework is that they had no substance. Words like "inspirational", "brilliant", and "rethink" generally trigger my BS alarm, so I really didn't know what to expect with Rework. I've been reading Signal vs. Noise, the design and usability blog by 37signals, for a few years now, and I've had plenty of time to become acquainted with Jason and David's style. That I even refer to them by their first names should clue you in to their style. They come across in writing as they do in their live webcasts and presentations: familiar. Point is, I've been irked by the longest by those vapid early reviews to come out. They meant nothing to me. Hopefully you'll find this review more much helpful for determining whether or not Rework is worth your time.

TL;DR Version: Buy the book if you have no idea what 37signals stands for. If you do, expect SvN on paper.

Long Version: If you've never heard of 37signals or read Signal vs. Noise and you're a business owner or someone who needs to buy a book for an "entrepreneur" (Jason and David prefer the term "starter"), then this is a pretty good book to purchase. It's 273 pages, but most of that is filled with white space and somewhat relevant artwork (almost too much artwork, really), so it's an easy read. From start to finish I spent just over a few hours reading Rework, and I'm no speed reader by any stretch of the imagination. Don't expect to be blown away by any revolutionary ideas, either. One of the early reviews to come out said, "The clarity, even genius, of this book actually brought me to near-tears on several occasions" (Tom Peters, New York Times bestselling author). I don't want to bad mouth the guy, because I don't know him, but that's some wicked crazy rad hyperbole. This is a simple book that's just a by-product of the blog. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you are someone who is very familiar with 37signals and has spent a considerable amount of time reading the blog, then don't feel like you need to pick up this book immediately. Don't get me wrong, $12 (or however much it costs when you buy Rework) is entirely worth it, if even just to have some good night time reading material. But if you think that Rework will bring you any additional insight into 37signals beyond what is available online, then you are thinking incorrectly. Rework felt like a package of SvN blog posts from 2007 to 2009. I'll explain why in a bit.

The Major Takeaways:

If you're strapped for cash and still want to take away lessons from this book, just read the table of contents and then cross-reference those words with the 37signals blog. Jason and David do a heck of a job being straightforward about what they are writing about. For example, "Ignore the real world" (page 13) can be found on their website. In fact, a whole bunch of their content from Rework can be found on their website. To wit:

"Learning from mistakes is overrated" (Rework, page 16): "Learning from failure is overrated" (Feb. 3rd, 2009)(SvN)
"Planning is Guessing" (Rework, page 19): "The Planning Falacy" (Jun. 12th, 2009) (SvN)
"Workaholism" (Rework, page 25): "Fire the workaholics" (Mar. 7th, 2008) (SvN)
"Enough with 'Entrepreneurs'" (Rework, page 28): "The word entrepreneur and its baggage" (Apr. 22nd, 2009) (SvN)
"Scratch your own itch" (Rework, page 34): "What's your problem?" (Getting Real)
"No time is no excuse" (Rework, page 40): "There's always time to launch your dream" (Mar. 10, 2009) (SvN)
"Outside Money is Plan Z" (Rework, page 50): "Fund yourself" (Getting Real)

And that's just the first 50 pages! You see where I'm going with this. If you are an avid reader of 37signals and have kept up with them for 6-12 months, then most of what you read in Rework will simply be a regurgitation of what's already been written online. That's why the early reviews really irked me. Is this book insightful? Clearly. Is it legendary or tear-worthy? Give me a break! The grand language is really making me distrust books, and if I didn't already know the great work that 37signals does or if I were not already a long time customer with 37signals, I wouldn't have bought this book. The flowery language of the early reviews just made me expect the world from Rework, and all I really got was the hardcover form of Signal v. Noise, with better edits and word choice.

I wouldn't write this long, rambling review if I wasn't passionate about the line of work that 37signals is in. I owe much of my organization and peace of mind to 37signals products, so count me as one of the 37signals "audience" members. I think Rework is an exceptional book in that it serves as a reminder of many of the lessons and "recipes" that Jason and David have given us through the years. It is definitely worth the money if you have not already internalized much of the lessons contained in the Rework table of contents. If you have, and you are an avid fan of Jason and David already, then there's really no need to read Rework unless you have some extra time on your hands.

And to Jason and David, if either of you actually read this review, then I hope in your next book you'll ditch the early BS reviews. That's my main gripe. If you want to recycle SvN from 2009-2011 and turn it into a book called ENHANCE! in 2012, that's fine by me. I'll be the first one in line to read it; but know that I, and many other readers, will expect to see the same stuff that we've already read on the blog. I love the work you two do; I mean I REALLY love the work that you two do. But come on. Don't set me up for the stars and then throw glitter in my face.

All in all I give Rework a 7/10. It's worth a read if you have no clue what 37signals stands for. Even if you do, buy the book for a friend or out-of-touch boss.

Good advice, but not really anything new

This book is filled with some great advice for those who want to start their own business, have their own business, or are just interested in the subject.

As a fan of 37 Signals the company and a frequent reader of their blog, I was excited when Rework was first announced (so excited I pre-ordered it). From the initial descriptions, I was excited to read a full-length book from Jason Fried and David Heinemeir Hansson. My hope was that they would expand on the ideas frequently discussed on their blog and elaborate on some more of their personal experiences in running a very successful small company.

Unfortunately, if you are familiar with the authors, their blog, or their previous book "Getting Real", then very little of the content in this book is new. All of the lessons and chapters feel like retreads of previous material, even down to some of the analogies such as "be like a chef" or "be a curator".

So while I think some of the lessons in this book are great, I feel that it deserves a 3 star rating because so few of these lessons are new material.

On a similar note, I think my biggest gripe here might be with the length of the book: it may appear to be 270 pages, but there are only about 100 pages of actual content in Rework. The book is really about 100 or so one-page essays, separated by a full page illustration between each section.

I really wanted to be excited by this book but having read their previous output, unfortunately I found very little new material to digest and the illustrations between sections feel like nothing more than filler.

So if you are not familiar with 37 Signals or their blog, and you dream of one day starting your own company, then this book is filled with great advice. But if you are familiar with the company, their blog, or "Getting Real", there is almost nothing new here for you.

I HATE that I hate this book

SECOND REVISION: 37Signals is now ACTIVELY MANAGING the comments about this horrid book. They sent a barrage of fanboys to this page to "unlike" this post to move it down the page. There it is in a nutshell folks. Everything I said in this original review -- about 37Signals being an empty suit -- is proven true. Apparently, 37Signals' advice to "pick a fight," means to pick a fight with anyone but them.

REVISION: Have you noticed that every time a negative review is posted about this book, the book is magically bombarded with positive one- and two-line reviews that "move" that negative review down the page and keep the book in the four- to five-star range? There's your 37Signals pathology. We don't have to have a good product as long as people THINK we have a good product. We can be paper-thin content-wise, but as long as we keep our four-star rating -- and keep negative reviews buried -- we'll continue to be "successful." Classic.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: I had high expectations for this book. I really wanted to like it. But, let's face it: this book is not operating in the real world; it's operating in the 37Signals world. I'm happy they developed their company from scratch and have managed to keep it small and profitable. It is true what they say in the book that your company is more nimble and flexible when it is small. Growth is not only difficult to manage, it's difficult to maintain and even more difficult to sustain. They claim that the reason they've managed to stay small is because they won't compromise their principals and add things to their products THEY don't think their customers need. What they call the "simplicity" of their products, most people call the "limitations" of their products. But, if you look at the 37Signals products, you will see that they are horrifically over-priced. You get far less for your money than with many other comparable products. I should know. I've tried them all.

And let's get something else out of the way too: this book IS NOT 288 pages long. Oh, there are 144 sheets of paper folded in half and glued into a book with writing on them to make it LOOK like there's 288 pages. But this book is really about 100 pages long. I read the entire book in about two hours -- and I'm a "meticulous" reader. Almost every other page is some sort of graphic. All the chapters end abruptly and within four or five pages (with the exception of one or two chapters).

Yes, I teach at a business school. And, yes, business school theory is pretty much the antithesis of what is in this book -- or, rather, what is in this book is the antithesis of business school theory. That appeals to some people for its heretic value. But I can tell you that I also counsel budding entrepreneurs, and the theoretical foundation established in business school works for more people than the devil-may-care-let-the-chips-fall-where-they-may laissez-faire attitude purported in this book. It's common knowledge that the way to sell books is to buck conventional wisdom. Take the opposite point of view. That's fine if you want to write a book bucking conventional wisdom, but MAKE YOUR CASE. Don't fill a book full of platitudes, opinions and unsupported, unsubstantiated evidence (and using your own company as an example most of the time) and then expect us to swallow it without questioning it.

In all fairness, one of the tenets of this book is to keep things simple. This book unabashedly attempts to make the case that the more you can simplify, the easier your life will be. Undeniably. But complexity and details are what the real world is made of. Following their own advice, everything in the book is stripped down to bare bones. They even say in the book that there was a wholesale reduction in the size of the book just before it went to print. I would have liked to have seen what they threw away. There might have been more substance, more detail -- and it might have been a more likable book.

Instead, this book attempts to make the case for the following:

* Don't work hard
* Don't plan for anything
* Don't have meetings
* Charge more (for less)
* Above all else, limit growth as much as possible
* Emulate drug dealers (not kidding)
* Follow your heart, not your customers (huh?)
* "Underdo your competition" (that's a direct quote)
* BAD-MOUTH YOUR COMPETITION (this might be the dumbest advice I've ever read in a book. Try this experiment sometime: go into a job interview and say extremely bad things about your former boss. Watch how fast you're shown the door).

Some reviewers (and the book itself) have stated that this book is for new entrepreneurs. If you start a business of any substance and you follow the rules in this book, you will fail.

And, $22? SERIOUSLY?? This book (and the pricing of it) is a metaphor for the entire 37Signals company: stripped down product, very little substance and a high price tag.

Again, I hate that I hate it, because I really wanted to like it when I first started reading it. Two hours later, I was done with it and no smarter than I was when I started it.

Amazing collection

Not since I was introduced to Wislawa Szymborska's writing have I found a collection of poetry that I not only wanted to read over and over and over again, but to memorize every word so that I could recite the poems to myself whenever I wished. Mary Karr's newest collection, SINNERS WELCOME, is a beautiful meditation on revelation in a world gone mad with abundance and self-interest. Karr seeks and finds the divine in the grittiest of objects and places - factory restrooms, a coat hangar, ashes sent to her in a plastic bag labeled "Mother, 1/2". Karr's poetry is a reminder that the sacred is everywhere, only hidden from view until we draw it out with our longing.

Concurrent shame and redemption is a recurring theme in this collection. The poet often writes of reaching out to the sacred just as she shrinks back from it, as in "Disgraceland":

"I found myself upright
in the instant, with a garden
inside my own ribs aflourish. There, the arbor leafs.
The vines push out plump grapes.
You are loved, someone said. Take that
and eat it."

Or, in one of my favorites - "For a Dying Tomcat Who's Relinquished His Fomer Hissing and Predatory Nature", in which the poet cradles her dying cat and finds an analogy between herself and the cat, and God and herself:

"It hurts to eat. So you surrender in the way
I pray for: Lord, before my own death,
let me learn from this animal's deep release
into my arms. Let me cease to fear
the embrace that seeks to still me."

The waxing and waning of human relationships is another theme: the collection includes two beautiful requiems for deceased friends:"Metaphysique du mal", and "Elegy for a Rain Salesman", as well as a few poems on the theme of her son's birth, childhood, and departure for college. Whether she is talking of delinquents or dying cats, serial-killing football players or her alcoholic mother, Karr writes with a rare grace that will astonish the reader with its truth and beauty.

Her final essay "Facing Altars" is a beautiful explanation of and companion to her poetry. The essay is ostensibly about how she became a believer after being a confirmed agnostic for forty years by approaching prayer through poetry, and finding similarities between them: "With both prayer and poetry, we use elegance to exalt, but we also beg and grieve and tremble." She also outlines the next step in her literary project: to bring more joy to the poetry that she writes, and prove the maxim "Happiness writes white" wrong.

This collection suffers by two points. The first, I lay solely on the publisher: the jacket blurb, which opens "Mary Karr describes herself as a black-belt sinner . . ." and continues with "Not since St. Augustine wrote 'Give me chastity Lord - but not yet!' has anyone brought such smart assed hilarity to a conversion story." The "Catholic Girls Gone Wild" label that this blurb gives the book is misleading. First of all, if Karr is indeed a "black belt sinner", no evidence towards this label is presented in this collection. No sins she discusses reach anywhere past blue belt, unless you're the Jerry Fallwell type. Second of all, while some of the poems are funny, the collection is far too good to be demeaned by the label "smart-ass", which is something you would call a funny kid who talked back or a bawdy comedian. Janeane Garofalo is smart-ass. Mary Karr is not. It really irks me how much the publishing industry has sexed up their jacket blurbs to make things seem "hip" and "edgy". They usually end up just misleading and degrading the work they describe. They should stop.

The second point by which this collection suffers isn't in the poems themselves, either, but in the final essay, "Facing Altars: Poetry and Prayer". The essay does a good job of explaining how an 'undiluted agnostic' could convert to Catholicism. It is personal and empathetic, and I really enjoyed it. My only problem with it is in the opening paragraph: "To confess my unlikely Catholicism in Poetry -- the journal that first published some of the godless twentieth-century disillusionaries of J. Alfred Prufrock and his pals -- feels like an act of perversion kinkier than any dildo-wielding dominatrix could manage on HBO's 'Real Sex Extra.'

While publishing an essay on Karr's conversion through poetry in the same journal that T.S. Eliot published "Prufrock", the same poem that brought Karr to poetry, is fitting, or ironic, or something, it is not kinky in any definition of of the word kinky, and the "dildo-wielding dominatrix" line is so out of place in the context of her poetry and the rest of the essay, that it really threw me off of Karr's message in her final essay. If I didn't know that the essay had been published in _Poetry_ magazine before being published here, I would have thought that that opening paragraph was thrown in to justify the "smart-ass" description on the jacket blurb, and anyway had the effect of again, trying to sex up something that could have stood on its own merits.

This is a fantastic collection of poetry, and is highly recommended.

She sees the light!

I picked up this book at a bookstore, because I remembered a couple of her poems I saw in the New Yorker, one was "The Choice" and the other was "Blessing from My Sixteen Year Son". Both I knew were wonderful poems, so I bought it. I've probably read this amazing book from cover to cover about 3-4 times already, and I've worked my way backwards, picking up all her earlier work. I've always been a huge Larkin fan and it's good to see the voice of angst again, but this time, unlike Larkin, there is hope for Karr, whereas Larkin dwelled in a world of desolation having never loved someone. This book is highly recommended, one of the few gems in contemporary poetry.

Bumping Into Spiritual Meaning

Mary Karr is an amazing poet, an amazing thinker who is able to distill her responses to the world as she finds it and opens a few windows into the world as she wants or thinks it should be. We need Mary Karr and others who write words like these wonderful poems. She reminds us that there is a sense of meaning if we seek it. And while it is a well known fact that Karr's journey from agnosticism to Catholicism is a head-scratcher at best, the poems in this her fourth anthology, are among her finest.

A good example is her poem 'Orders from the Invisible':

'Insert coin. Mind the gap. Do not disturb

hung from the doorknob of a hotel room,

where a man begged to die entwined in my arms.

He once wrote

he'd take the third rail in his teeth, which is how

loving him turned out.

The airport's glass world

glided me gone from him, and the sky I flew into

grew a pearly cataract through which God

lost sight of us. The moving wall

is nearing its end.'

Read it, and then with all of Karr's poems, pause, think, and read it again. This is a major poet with a unique voice that has much to tell us - if we are open to listening. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, May 06

Not Scary, but very interesting to read

I have only done minimal research on the Bell Witch or "Old Kate" so I really cannot vouch for the accuracy of this novel. True the introduction implies that this book is from a long lost document, a first hand account written by Richard Powell, for those of you who are familiar with the tale of the Bell Witch, Richard Powell was the school master who eventually married Betsy Bell. Betsy was the Bell Daughter who was most violently attacked by the witch.

Though many of the accounts in this book mirror those that have been documented, there appears to be some creative license taken. So go into this book viewing as an interesting story BASED on events that may have happened. Some of the events that have not been verified but that occur in this book are the presence of Andrew Jackson and the rather questionable ending. Still this was a very interesting read, and I'm glad I finally sat down and committed to it. I have not seen the movie made from this book, but have been told it is a descent film.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Bell witch tale, it takes place in Tennessee during the settlements. The Bell family found themselves in a financial dispute with Kate Batts, an eccentric neighbor who then proceeded to curse them in public. Soon after the curse, strange events began happening, first starting with noises then as the supernatural occurrence gained strength it began attacking Betsy Bell, the youngest of the daughters. As the poltergeist activity heightened, the towns people were brought in, many who witnessed events and even spoke with the "witch" which they referred to as "Old Kate" after the woman who they assumed had conjured the demon. The ghost or witch could at times be friendly and helpful and at other times deceitful and dangerous.

The idea of using the teacher as the voice was a good choice because he was not a part of the family, so he was not privy to all of the ghost's deeds, but since both his home and the schoolhouse were on the Bell's property, he was present for much of the drama, and witnessed many of the events. Add into this the fact that although she was much younger than he - he was in love with Betsy Bell. This gave him a level of concern beyond that of curious neighbor.

The voice of the book felt genuine, and as a reader, you do feel genuine concern for those involved. And at times you can't help but be enamored by Old Kate with her devilish attitudes and whimsical nature. I felt this was actually a more well written novel than "Amityville Horror" which was also supposed to be a "true" account of a haunting. This one was a far more enjoyable read and was extremely interesting. Though I'm not a believer or dis-believer in the Bell Witch or any other supernatural phenomenon, I would not hold this book up as accurate. Entertaining - yes, enlightening - no. Either way, it was fun to read.

Awesome true story

I grew up near the Bell Witch area and was quite familiar with the story; when I learned that an authenticated account previously unpublished was available, of course I got it. This account tallies with the hundreds of eye-witness events, and has a stunning ending.

Remember that this book was written in the early 1800's and will have the style of the day; also, the writer was not writing a fictional account for amusement--he was writing FACT. To my mind, it's an excellent read, and fascinating because, frankly, if it's not true, then literally hundreds of people were wrong. A must read for all students of the unknown!

Powell Speaks Up!

This is the book that accompanies the motion picture starring Donald Sutherland and Sissy Spacek. The novel is a found manuscript that purports to be written by Richard Powell, who married Betsy Bell, who was a target of the supernatural forces that haunted the Bell farm and eventually killed her father, John Bell.

Powell tells the story from the viewpoint of one who actually witnessed the events. The story follows the major accepted facts of the case, and makes no denial of any claim set forth by others. It does however, mention that John Bell was excommunicated from the church he helped found on a charge of unjust usury in his dealings with Kate Batts. This has resulted in John Bell losing his good name as a man who owed no one anything, and many shunned him. Some books, like Martin Ingram's paint John as the "salt of the earth." This one reveals him as a man who has had problems and strives to make the best of it; accepting the judgement of both the court and the church.

While Powell does not deny that any of the haunting took place, and indeed confirms that it did, he leaves this journal for his daughter to explain the real reason the "witch" came and why it tormented John and Betsy Bell. If you have seen the movie, you know what transpired, if not I won't spoil the reveal for you.

Could it have been as Powell recounts? Possible, perhaps, from a certain point of view. But if so there ought to be thousands of these "witches" reported throughout American as many men are guilty of sharing John Bell's crime. Was there some reason other than Powell's explanation for the phenomena? There certainly could be. And last, could it all have been a hoax? If so, it wasn't perpetrated by the Bell family, as they suffered horrible things. But it is a foregone conclusion that John Bell was a hard man and disliked by some. How this hoax would have been accomplished is a puzzle that would have to involve multiple people working as one. This is possible, but unlikely.

About the Author
In September 2006, MOSHE KAI CAVALIN became the youngest student to take college classes in the United States. He was eight years old. In spring and fall 2007, he became the youngest student to make the dean's and president's honor lists, at ages eight and nine respectively. At the age of eleven, he earned his second AA degree with a 4.0 GPA, making him the youngest student in the United States to have graduated summa cum laude. In addition to his academic achievements he is an accomplished martial artist, pianist, and soccer player.

A Fantastic Book for Pre-Teens, Teens, and Parents Who Want to Inspire Their Kids

Great book! Remarkable "full scope" coverage in a short & sweet "quick read". Invaluable. Get 10 of them and give them to your friends & relatives!

My favorite parts of the book are:

1) Moshe Kai describes how probably the single biggest key element in his tremendous successes is that when he chooses an endeavor-- whether scuba diving, martial arts, or of course his math & physics classes-- he puts his "whole heart" into it. Then he follows through with adequate time, planning, and effort.

2) MK describes the mind-boggling bureaucratic obstacles he faced, which was a remarkable "real-world" education in itself.

3) MK describes not a "lost childhood", but rather a very happy childhood spent scuba diving with colorful fish and friendly dolphins, training martial arts in the park, and shared with a wonderful family. There were some heartbreaks and other mis-haps, as befalls pretty much everyone, but overall MK easily dispels his critics' theories that his spectacular achievements must have caused some sort of "unhappy childhood". Instead, MK describes great times that anyone would enjoy.

Finally, his purpose throughout the book-- and even its title-- is that lots more kids "can do" what Moshe Kai has done. On page 44, MK writes (sic) "I do not like to share my inner thoughts because they are the essence of my being.... I only expose my inner feelings with hope that I may lead some kids to see my success and believe that they can do the same or better. If one kid can accomplish it or go far beyond because my book, I will be overjoyed."

I know for a fact that other kids can achieve what MK has done: that's why I developed the "FromZeroToCalculus" � System (website: FromZeroToCalculus.com), where rapid advancement is attainable.

Again, I highly recommend Moshe Kai's book, "We Can Do", about how he entered college at age 8 and graduated at age 11 with an Associate's Degree Summa Cum Laude and a 4.0 GPA. Enjoy it, be inspired by it, and give copies to your friends and relatives!

Remarkable Human Being

I bought this book hoping to motivate my elementary-age child, instead I was inspired myself. Moshe Kai is a remarkable person not only for his long list of impressive achievements, but also for his extremely courageous and magnanimous character. As a young student in a junior college he became very disillusioned with how the student activities fees were wasted on parties, instead of stimulating speakers, so he ran for student office. The college administrators conspired against him, and his friends warned him to give up the attempt, but Moshe ran anyways on principle. Naturally he lost, and the school retaliated by denying him academic honors and scholarship money. "I was not sad at the pen pushers' attitude because I knew I was correct."

As a result, Moshe lost a year in his education with a forced vacation from his studies. No where in the book does Moshe call them out by name. He names only people deserving praise and leaves out the names of those who treated him cruelly. "...many base individuals do terrible acts for personal gain. To understand this process and let go and not revenge for acts done by base persons is divine."

Instead of fretting about things he cannot control, Moshe puts his trust in his Creator that things will work out, "My faith in my Creator led me to believe somehow that I would find a solution to my problem."

But, this is not a very religious book, as much as it is a book written by a person with an indomitable spirit who just happens to be religious. Another excellent quote: "When I experience events going against me, I think two ways: At a certain point, the bad events will end and I need to be resilient and patient and wait until the good waves start to come ashore. The sun always will rise over the darkness."

He does discuss the methods his parents used to teach him and emphasizes that patience, resilience, and practice are key. Even geniuses have to work hard!!

So, in short, this book is about the successes of a remarkable person, who is hard-working, patient, and emotionally mature beyond his years. Buy it and you might be inspired to try things you thought not possible and to learn patience when the going gets difficult.

This volume uncovers a history of disability in African American slavery from the primary record, analyzing how concepts of race, disability, and power converged in the United States in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Slaves with physical and mental impairments often faced unique limitations and conditions in their diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation as property. Slaves with disabilities proved a significant challenge to white authority figures, torn between the desire to categorize them as different or defective and the practical need to incorporate their "disorderly" bodies into daily life. Being physically "unfit" could sometimes allow slaves to escape the limitations of bondage and oppression, and establish a measure of self-control. Furthermore, ideas about and reactions to disability―appearing as social construction, legal definition, medical phenomenon, metaphor, or masquerade―highlighted deep struggles over bodies in bondage in antebellum America.

Great contribution to history of disability and the history of slavery

This is a great book. For me, it was a particularly great discovery because I teach a history of disability class at a historically black university but it's well worth reading for anyone interested in history of disability or history of slavery. Foster describes the ways that the abusive system of slavery created disability among slaves. She also discusses the disturbing ways that disability intersected with slavery in a system that assessed people for their monetary value.

Nice book but..

My only frustration is that she assumes we all own a pressure cooker!! ALL of the lentil recipes and many, many others in the book have instructions using the pressure cooker method only. It would have been nice to also include alternative stovetop instructions. Frustrating to say the least, since the recipes look sooo inviting..

My most used cookbook

I found this book in our public library and used it so much that I had to buy it. The step by step directions are great. A basic recipe for potatoes and peas used the same ingredients that I have been using for decades but the proportions were different. The result was yummy. I felt like I was eating my mom's cooking. I have found recipes for north Indian meals that I haven't seen elsewhere. This cookbook is so good that I am buying another copy to send to my daughter.

This is absolutely one of my favorite cookbooks! The recipes are flavorful, simple, authentic, and taste amazing. There are very nice illustrations of each item throughout. The recipes are as easy to follow and easy to cook. Whether you are vegetarian or not, if you enjoy good Indian food, you will love this book!

heart wrenching character driven tale

It has been twelve years since Will Hatfield was sentenced to Clarkeston Federal prison, but he is about to be released in two months. He has a great desire to see the family farm in Dogwood, West Virginia and Karin the only woman h ever loved. When he went to prison, she never answered his letters as she made a new life for herself in a passionless marriage with three children she adores.

When Will comes home, he is not greeted like the prodigal son as most locals believe he should have spent his life in prison for his crimes; even his brother would be happier if he left. The family has been dragged through the sewage due to Will's DUI vehicular homicide of two innocent girls. He is attacked at the place he used to work and the town tries to take the farm away from him due to eminent domain. Karin is coming to learn the truth ABOUT THE SACRIFICE Will made for her.

On the surface DOGWOOD seems like a straight line story with Danny the brother of the dead sisters receiving counseling because he blames himself for their deaths. Karin tries to be happy in her situation while Will shows patience as he waits for Karin to realize the truth. None of the peoples' stories are quite what they appear as the revelations are quite shocking. Chris Fabry has written a heart wrenching character driven tale as each of the key players feels guilt while praying for redemption and a fresh start.

Beautifully Written

I picked up Dogwood yesterday, and pretty much didn't (couldn't) put it down until I finished this afternoon.

Fabry's writing had me from the first page. I love his wit - not too in-your-face; just enough to keep me smiling throughout. His use of metaphor is flawless. His character development was rich. His theological content was deep without being preachy. And His twists caught me at the end.

Honestly, it isn't the type of book I typically read. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it cover-to-cover. There was a depth, a sweetness, and (for lack of a better term) a melancholy that drew me in and wouldn't let go. Fabulous book!

Dogwood Truly Powerful

It is sad that anyone would read Dogwood by Chris Fabry and refer to it as a Christian novel and that therefore they found it hard to read. Individuals with that reaction are very much the same people that the story talks about, the members of the Christian church that rejects the returning convict without knowing the whole story or members of a community who do not want foreign elements coming back like a cancer, ignoring the cancers right before their very eyes. If that is an indictment of the readers, I must apologize because Will Hatfield, Chris Fabry's protagonist, does not recent the anger he encounters, but rather understands and empathizes with it, while at the same time refusing to accept it. This novel, unlike so many previous "Christian novels" deals with the real world in real world terms that some might find offensive. I did not. Quite the contrary. I found Fabrey's way of handling the realities of life honest and at times lyric, which is what makes it something special.
This is a story of love, of faith, of true sacrifice. It may indeed be pushing it a bit to put this novel on the level of allegory, yet there are parallels between Will Hatfield and Tom Joad, Steinbeck's hero from The Grapes of Wrath. I found it hard to put this novel down, and when I finally got to the weekend and didn't have to put it down, I didn't! I am very proud to see Tyndale publish a novel of this magnitude. I am exceptionally impressed with Chris Fabry's first attempt at an "adult" novel, and I look forward to many more. Anyone wanting a dynamic, powerful, moving novel to read has to pick up Dogwood and read it on its own terms. I am sure that you will not be disappointed.

Recommended Tutorial.......

If you are a beginner this book is great as it assumes so. But at the same times it doesn't confuse you with unnecessary stuff. Dwells upon all the aspects of how to proceed with making simple designs using keypoints and nodes and also on using or importing advanced solid models (IGES or STEP etc.). Salient feature of this tutorial is that it drives home the most important FEM concepts through simple example problems. Definitely recommend.
