fabulous massage book!

I was in a Physical Therapist Assistant program a while back. Most "massage" books go over the basics, but miss the detailed information that most people need to know in order to give a "proper massage". This book goes into detail about landmarks, pressure on soft tissue and also has a CD with instructions on how to improve your massage technique. I used this book as a guide to give my husband a massage shortly after exiting the program & he now wants me to always give him a massage based on the information I learned from this book.

Cute Christmas Story

This is a cute Christmas story about two completely opposite people that, with all the right twists and turns, find out that all they ever wanted was right in front of them. Easy to read, and hard to put down, I was a bit sad to see it end. It was very easy to visualize the characters with the descriptions given by the author. Can't wait to read more of her stories.

I truly enjoyed reading this light-hearted story about love at Christmas time. It was very easy to follow and I found at times I was sad, then laughing and always anticipating what would happen next. I have a tween daughter who is reading it now and she is really enjoying the book. I think the author did a great job!

About the Author
Alan Fogel is a professor of psychology at the University of Utah. Born in Miami, Florida, he earned his B.S. in physics at the University of Miami (1967, Coral Gables, Fla.) and his M.A. in physics at Columbia University (1968, New York, N.Y.) where he was a Faculty Fellow. During his three-year term with the United States Peace Corps in Bogot�, Colombia, Fogel taught physics and worked on developing physics curricula for high schools. Through this experience, Fogel became interested in how people learn, which led to his completion of a Ph.D. in education, in 1976, with a focus on early childhood development, at the University of Chicago. Dr. Fogel is active as a researcher and author. He has written books on early social and communicative development, Developing through Relationships (University of Chicago Press, 1993) and Change processes in relationships: A relational historical research approach. (with A. Garvey, H. Hsu, & D. West-Stroming, Cambridge University Press, 2006). He has co-edited multiple books on research in child development: Emotion and Early Interaction (with Tiffany Field, 1982), Origins of Nurturance: Biological, Cultural, and Developmental Perspectives in Caregiving (with Gail F. Melson, 1985), and Dynamics and Indeterminism in Social and Developmental Processes (with Maria Lyra and Jaan Valsiner, 1997), the Handbook of Infant Development (with Gavin Bremner, 2001), and Human development in the 21st century: Visionary policy ideas from systems scientists (with Barbara J. King and Stuart Shanker, 2008). He has also written an undergraduate text on child development, Child Development: Individual, Family, and Society (with Gail F. Melson). Fogel's scholarly papers on development in infancy, which include studies of emotional development, social and communicative development in relation to parents and to peers, and topics of infant development of concern to health care providers and early childhood educators, have been published in Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Developmental Science, Early Development and Parenting, Infant Behavior and Development, Infancy, Infant and Child Development, International Journal of Behavioral Development, Journal of Developmental Processes, and Social Development. Fogel has been supported in his research through grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National March of Dimes Foundation, the Nancy Lurie Marks Family Foundation, the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love, and the United States Department of Agriculture. He has lectured widely in the United States, Japan (where he spent the 1983 1984 academic year as a senior research scholar under a Fulbright fellowship), Brazil, and Europe (where he was a visiting professor at the Free University in Amsterdam in 1990 and again in 1995, at the University of Florence in Italy in 1996, and the University of Rome in 1999).

It came on time and was in good condition (I bought it used) so of course the edges were crinkled and the previous owner left highlights throughout the book, but the highlights are actually quite helpful.

Not what your father told you...

A very different perspective on the topic. Well documented with lots of additional commentary and reference information.

To disclose, I am north of 30 yrs. old and vividly remember my father lecturing that video games and computers in general were a waste of time. While I'm not an active gamer these days, due to time restrictions, it is a good thing that I learned computers. My living is made almost entirely from my use and knowledge of computers and the information therein.

Now it's my turn as a father. My son is worldwide rated on an overseas online game. I don't see the attraction to the game (not my taste) and personally think it's a waste of time (sounds scarily familiar). However, he started taking online Mandarin lessons. I was curious as to why (was there a girlfriend I didn't know about?). Anyway, when asked he told me he wanted to understand what the other players were saying. Interesting!

The points about the benefits to cancer patients, weight control, non-active seniors, etc. were enlightening.

More importantly, and in line with the Authors body of work, is how do we bridge gaps with our children rather than building more walls.

In closing, I'm still going to tell him to get off the games and go outside on those lovely summer days, however, I'll at least have a more rounded viewpoint thanks to this book.
