Hear The Silence is a fabulous informative book and should be required reading for everyone. Take this journey with Jamie through the wonder of being a gifted musician and living the rockstar lifestyle but also living with another all too common challenge.

OMG TYSM JAMIE! Received your book in the mail LATE Saturday afternoon Powerful, Encouraging ...you made me cry MAN... I tell ya the truth… the only reason I put it down is because my husband & I had a date Saturday night. I was not expecting a note from you in your own handwriting... I took the book, pressed it to my heart & shed a few tears. I’m totally in awe of you being just a regular guy with a big heart that possess supernatural abilities in music; playing it, teaching it and unknowingly reaching masses. It looks like you may have super powers in more areas than You KNOW!!! God topped the super with your natural. Your natural is amped up for more than your guitar…lol! Man there's been days where I just didn't want to be here... but I didn't check out… People think we're high when we're hyper, depressed or just straight having temporary melt downs.. geesh. Jamie's book Hear The Silence was written in the spirit of positive, loving energy that is Jamie Glaser! Jamie is a very, talented hard working musician. More importantly is the love he feels and shows for fellow human beings and for the animals he cares for with great tenderness. Jamie shares his story of his fight with mental illness, and he emerges a clear winner in every sense of the word. He gives his take on how to improve your life, not as proselytizing, but as loving advice from one who lived through some tough times. Jamie's book is a quick, fun read and everyone can take something from it. Thanks Jamie!

A significant advance for interface design

This book offers a substantive development for interface design. Bennett and Flach present the full package; a strong theoretical foundation, a comprehensive strategy of analysis, and a detailed strategy for representational design. To illustrate the intricacies in application of their design strategy, they offer design tutorials on process control, aircraft control, mobile phones, and command and control. However, their strategy can be generalized to any complex, interactive work domain.

I cannot remember the last time I was so enthusiastic about a book. Am I being overly enthusiastic? This is an area that has troubled me throughout my professional career of 30+ years. Interface design professionals have not done a good job of linking foundational theory to analysis and then following through with a strong conceptualization that links the analysis to the design. I have read many books on this topic over the years, generally finding something of value but not, until now, finding a systematic and comprehensive treatment that can transition interface design from an art form into a well-ordered discipline.

Back to the Drawing Board

I was greatly looking forward to what sounded like a unique and modern approach to an ancient way. However, within the first few minutes of reading I came across what I can only call unforgivable typos. When a writer and/or their proofer and editor do not know the difference between weather/whether, or lightning/lightening, and allow such serious errors to be published in a book that's asked to be taken seriously, it does not bode well. There were also "normal" typos of misspelling. As I tried to give the material the benefit of the doubt, I realized I was bracing myself for the next blunder and increasingly losing my concentration and attention to the actual content.
It is with disappointment that I can only give this 3 stars because I couldn't proceed any further to truly explore its contents.

She focuses instead on the universal meaning of trigrams in terms of natural elements (Sky, Mountain, etc.) This book would be a potent addition to the collection of anyone studying divination.

An excellent little book jammed packed with information!

"Rapid Interpretation of Ventilator Waveforms" is a 132 page introductory text on ventilator waveforms by three well known professors from Georgia State University, Jonathan Waugh, Vijay Deshpande, and Robert Harwood. They have put together a systematic presentation of waveform analysis starting from simple flow, pressure, and volume changes all the way to flow volume loops and troubleshooting problems in the clinical setting. This is an excellent little book jammed packed with information that can be carried around in your lab coat when doing clinicals or when analyzing ventilator waveforms on the job. The book has hundreds of waveform examples with clear and easy to understand explanations. This is one of the few complete books available on ventilator waveform analysis and at only $29.00 it is definitely a must have book!

A useful book but at times will leave you wondering -- paid a stupid expensive price for the one at the campus bookstore ($70) but for the price of this the same content is present in the Dana Oakes book on mechanical ventilation, and more.
If you're not actually planning on spinning the knobs on the ventilator, it's not a bad little book, but if you're more involved in the upkeep of the machine, it'll leave you wanting.

About the Author

MASATOSHI NAKAYAMA carries on the tradition of his teacher, Gichin Funakoshl, the Father of Modern Karate. Long professor and director of physical education at Takushoku University, his alma mater (1937), he was chief instructor of the Japan Karate Association from 1955 until his death in 1987. A ninth degree black belt and a familiar face at tournaments, he was among the first to send instructors overseas and to encourage the development of karate along scientific lines.

Simply the Best

The Best Karate Series are the definitive books for learning the art of Shotokan karate. They have been around for many years and still none have surpassed their excellence. They are very helpful for the beginner and the advanced student alike. I have read them all and have found that each book in the series is excellent. Although you can't learn a martial art from a book alone, these books are an excellent supplement to your training and are very helpful in learning the finer points of the art of Shotokan. Each book in this series sets the standard for books on Shotokan training. There are simply none better, at least none better that I have found, and I read a lot of martial arts books. I highly recommend these books for anyone who is interested in improving their karate or who is interested in Shotokan. They are simply the best! Highly recommended. 5 Stars.

Brilliant work

I have gone through the other reviews and I disagree with the criticism a few of them show. I have so far read over 30 books on people-communications skills and relationships, and I believe this is one of the best. It is unique in its approach, ethical, very easy to read and, more importantly, it works. It absolutely works. I was pleasantly surprised for the results when applying the techniques. It is one of those books you read and re-read. Interacting with others successfully is one of the most difficult, yet rewarding aspects of life. I honestly think this book, if taken seriously, can dramatically improve that interaction. I have only endorsed five books in Amazon.com (Being an avid reader, I have bought and read about 120 during the last three years), and this is one of them.

Good ideas although too verbose

"People Skills" is a primer on interacting with others. Bolton's premise is that our communication patterns are inherently faulty and he urges the reader adopt his framework to remedy. He presents - in order - listening skills, assertion skills, conflict-resolution skills, and collaborative problem solving skills, with each building upon the others. He blends keen insight into human nature, concepts of psychology and basic Judeo-Christian values into what appears to be a very effective methodology. The skills seem obvious, but in practice are rarely used, and in fact are rather uncomfortable when trying to start using.
I found Bolton's framework very valuable and thus far see its application can profoundly improve my own people skills in both a business and parental setting. Unfortunately, like most books of this type, the text is extremely verbose. Bolton possesses a style that is much less dry and wordy than many of his peers - in fact, I find it difficult to finish most of these types of books - but the ideas plus examples could have been distilled down to one-half the length of the 300 pages. The text is also very well referenced and footnoted, but - as a lay reader - I think the constant crediting other psychologists and philosophers confuse and muddy the message. This could be a book that one could return to periodically to refresh their skills, but its length will prevent the less diligent. I found myself taking detailed notes on each chapter for later referral; while a testament to the material, I wish the author had made it easier to digest.

Starts strong, ends weak

Most books give you 2-3 really good nuggets of insight, hidden in a dry prairie of "heard-it-all-before." Such is the case with People Skills. Most of the content is obvious - have a pleasant demeanor when listening, reflect what you've heard, and so on. Not very insightful.

However I did walk away with a few insights. For instance, as you're reading this review, you may be thinking "Do I agree with this reviewer?" That's the first barrier to effective communication. We all have biases, we all filter what we hear to fit our biases, and we need to learn to turn off that filter - at least momentarily - and truly listen to what others are saying, without judging it too quickly. That insight alone made this book a worthwhile read.

There are other insights, supported by interesting research, especially in the early parts of the book. Later parts of the book begin to feel cumbersome, especially the entire section on negotiating conflict, which is based on a multi-step process that can easily be capsized if the person you're confronting is uncooperative.

Overall - good book, a couple good insights, but over-long and toward the end becomes less practical.

The last American frontier, Alaska packs into 615,230 square miles the American saga of explorers and hunters, followed first by miners and soldiers, then homesteaders and tourists making their way into the wilderness. Borneman, a historian and lawyer who has produced multimedia programs for National Geographic, is at his best when he writes about these heroes who battled treacherous weather and terrain. At the same time, he stages their adventures against the backdrop of military and political events. Though some newspapers derided Lincoln's secretary of state, William Seward, for purchasing the territory as a strategic outpost in 1867, his decision proved prescient during WWII, when Alaska proved useful in patrolling the northern Pacific, and especially during the Cold War, when it allowed us to keep watch over communist countries in Asia. Until it obtained statehood in 1959, however, Alaska remained a colonial possession where the U.S. government controlled access to natural resources on the land, in the water and under the surface. Even now, 41% of the state belongs to national reserves; and the controversies continue among conservationists, fisheries, and timber and oil companies. The chapters on Alaska's environment demonstrate the balance of textbook history and storytelling that makes this informative book so readable. On occasion, Borneman becomes mired in local history, such as the quarrel over the state capital, when he might have instead devoted these pages to the Natives, whom he leaves hovering in the background until they suddenly leap forward as activists in the 1960s. He might also have included illustrations. Mirroring the Alaskan landscape, the book's scale and blocks of unbroken text can be daunting. 10 maps.

An Exhaustive History

Walter R. Borneman's "Alaska: Saga of a Bold Land" delivers exactly what it promises to deliver from its subtitle. The book is a complete history of the 49th State, from prehistoric times until the dawn of the 21st Century. Checking in at 540 pages of narrative, it is as big and daunting as Alaska itself. Though the book could have used more illustrations and perhaps some photographs to assist the reader, Borneman is a good enough storyteller to keep things interesting.
The story begins with a discussion of the migration of native tribes from Siberia during the last ice age. Borneman then flashes forward to Vitus Bering and the first Russian explorations and colonization of the territory. This is then followed by "Seward's Folly," the American purchase of Alaska, which, surprisingly, as Borneman demonstrates was much more widely supported than many historical accounts would indicate. At two cents an acres, it was certainly one of the great bargains of the 19th Century.
Moving into the 20th Century, the story focuses on the Alaskan Gold Rushes and American settlement, the Japanese invasion during World War II, the 1964 earthquake, and finally the production of oil and the resulting envioronmental controversies. Borneman's scope is expansive, and any reader of his book will come away with a very complete knowledge of the history of what remains the last American frontier.
Overall, a comprehensive and well-written account that will be particularly appreciated by history buffs.

Get weaker as the history moves on.....

I thought this book does an excellent job of relating Alaskan history prior to statehood. The impact of Russian America and World War II proves to be well written. After statehood, it seem like only thing that went on in Alaska were related to oil, native land claims and 1964 Earthquake. There were whole lot more that took place in this state during the last 45 years that the book covered. Unfortunately, the author seem to be enamoured with the big headlines subjects in the post statehood period.

A thick book but its quite readable. For people living outside Alaska, this would be an excellent introduction to the Alaska's history. For the local folks like me, first half of the book remains interesting while the latter half appears to be rehashed of newspaper material. It may have been wise if the author stop at statehood and then wrote a second volume since he seem to have a decent flair for writing.

Well told....

Alaska, Saga of a Bold Land, is an archetype for North American regional history. In an entirely commendable fashion, Walter Borneman has provided the captivating details of a frontier state which remarkably remains so into the 21st century. Plotting the economic victories and upheavals, the natural disasters and wonders, Borneman deftly communicates the intimate details rarely found in such a readable history.
Borneman's view is a balanced one where competing interests are at play. In the ever divisive fight over land use and conservation, Borneman admirably selects the middle ground while patiently explaining the potential impacts upon Alaska's future. Such an objective and, yet, compelling achievement is highly appreciated as was Borneman's excellent asides into local characters and customs. Alaska has been pushed and pulled by outside interests since it's inception as an economic engine. From early Russian fur exploitation to contemporary cruise ship tourism, Alaska, Saga of a Bold Land, is a gem.

Angie is fat. And miserable. And she has her reasons. Her sister, a star basketball player turned soldier, has been captured in Afghanistan. Everyone thinks she’s dead. Angie’s lawyer mother busies herself with work. Her adopted Korean brother busies himself being obnoxious. And Angie goes around wearing her sister’s too-small b-ball T-shirt, trying to stay out of the mean girls’ way. At one point, she tries to slit her wrists and comes out bleeding onto the basketball court. Then KC comes to town. Cool and cute, she makes a beeline for Angie and no one can figure out why (including the reader). But as the world turns, so do the pages, and Angie decides maybe she can play varsity basketball like her sister, and maybe she can have a “gay-girl-gay” relationship with KC—although KC’s cutting gets in the way. Some of the characters don’t push much beyond stereotype, but Angie’s anguish and the dysfunction of her family seem quite real. As the story spins toward its conclusion, elements may seem preordained, but the emotion with which they’re infused gives them new life. Grades 9-12. --Ilene Cooper

Fat Angie: required reading

I believe that Fat Angie should be required reading for all who work with teens, and for teens too. It captures the heart of being different in high school, both the heart ache that it brings as well as the triumph of overcoming that adversity. If even one person can see you for what you really are, it frees you to see yourself that way too, and that is the first step to acceptance. This is a beautiful story, and a significant book. It will stand the test of time. I know because I am 59 years old and it spoke to the me that survived the nightmare of high school with the help of friends. I understand Fat Angie; I lived her pain. To see a book that does not dwell on self pity but rather focuses on the joy of never giving up and not giving in, to see that nonconformity is not a sin and should not feel the need to be forgiven, is wonderful. I highly recommend this book. It's stunning. My deepest gratitude to the author for planting this beacon of hope to all of us who work with kids and want so very deeply for them to survive intact and unique, as beautiful as we know they can be.

raw, funny and some (kc) romance

When I started reading "fat angie" it took me a few pages to find narrator's voice, but once I did, I didn't put the book down until I finished it. This is a story about pain and suffering that comes from bullying, but to just call it a book about bullying would be selling it short. The parts about the bullying are harsh, raw and hard, somehow though I felt the cold distanced contempt of Angie's mom, the most painful.
It's a story about people showing up, the coach an unexpected friend and of course romance.
in Fat Angie the romance part comes from KC Romance, the new girl in town. The fact that is a "gay-girl gay", as both girls call it, romance adds a little extra dimension to the book, but it's more about the emerging romance, that first doubt, that first kiss and it just happens to be two girls that fall in love.
Fat Angie is about of doubts, about love, about coming of age. Fat Angie is struggling with who you are, who you want to be, about finding perfection in imperfection. Fat Angie is about bravery and fear and I loved it.

Fat Angie is so much more than a book about bullying. It's more than a book about loss. And it's more than a book about self-discovery. It's a cautionary tale about what happens to the people left behind in war and an illustration of the disconnect that occurs in families suffering through intense grief.

The subject matter is raw at times, the approach unblinking, but there's an undercurrent of hope in the face of daunting situations and against sizeable odds that makes Fat Angie a joy to read.

And in case this review sounds too dark, let me add (without spoilers) that there are Hoosier-type moments and a quirky version of happily ever after, too:-)
