Whether you are a novice engineer looking to obtain your VCP or an experienced senior level virtualization engineer supporting customers this is a great read! I feel this book serves as a key reference tool from pre-sales/sales to administrators, engineers, and varchitects in the virtualized world!

Edward Haletky explains all the core components of VMWare's virtualization in an A-Z manner and covered many new features unlocked with vSphere 4.1. I have already adjusted design and service delivery plans, customer questionnaires, and configurations based on many commonly missed items by everyone involved the data center and virtualized life cycle.

All the key concepts, even those not always noticed or included in VCP training & boot camps are included in this book from Storage, Network, and Compute to Disaster Recovery planning and implementation. Honestly I enjoy the reference to real world scenarios given by the author, that are very on spot and key to understanding successful deployments of a virtualized infrastructure.

A worthy 2nd edition

Let me start with saying I've read the first edition of this book and Ed's Security book and found both to be excellent.

As this book was a second edition, I focused my reading on those updated areas and there were a few. As always Ed provided a good balance between detail and real world examples/implementations that carry the weight of his experience with VMware on the whole.

I'd recommend this book for those getting into their first few ESX/ESXi implementations, and to supplement the official VMware courseware with real world examples.

Great specifics on ESXi

I purchased this book to learn more about backing up and copying virtual disks from my ESXi server. So chapter 12 "Disaster Recovery, Business continuity and Backup" really did it for me. The experience and utility of the Kindle version specifically, saved me the shipping time. I obviously had the book in minutes, and had information that I couldn't have easily located by just Googling my question. (Specifically command line utilities that I wasn't even aware existed) The book overall looks VERY thorough, and specifically the chapter I was focused on, details a level of preparedness that shed some light for thoughts on new areas for me. Not having to lug around a giant reference book also saves my back. Thank you to the author for a great job, and the publisher for making this available in this format!

Carol Alexander is Professor of Finance and Chair of Risk Management at the ISMA Centre, University of Reading and formerly a Director and Head of Market Risk Modelling for Nikko Global Holdings and Academic Director of Algorithmics Inc. She has published over 30 papers in international journals and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of NetExposure, the electronic journal of financial risk, sponsored by Algorithmics. Her editorial experience includes 12 books on mathematics and finance, most recently two volumes on Measuring and Modelling Financial Risk and New Markets and Products (Wiley, 1998) and Visions of Risk (Financial Times Prentice Hall, 2000).

Carol has developed many models of risk management and investment analysis through consulting, training and research. She has given numerous training courses, seminars and conference presentations on measurement of market, credit and operational risk and on quantitative investment techniques. Carol Alexander also designs commercial software for risk management, portfolio management and trading. Her price prediction model won the first international non-linear financial forecasting competition in 1996.

Introduction

Mastering Risk Volume 1: Concepts provides a comprehensive overview of important concepts in risk management, including: risk measurement and management; risk strategy; operational risk; regulation; political risk; insurance and systemic risk. These concepts touch on a wide range of disciplines, such as psychology, law, marketing, and statistics. There are many short articles that are written at a non-technical level by leading academics and specialist practitioners working in the field of risk management.

Mastering Risk Volume 2: Models also contains contributions from leading academics and top industry practitioners working in the field of risk management. However each of the 14 chapters are written at an advanced level that assumes readers are somewhat familiar with the area. Several chapters have a high mathematical content; these aim to provide an in-depth understanding of the latest issues and the most important practical problems in risk measurement and management. The book has been divided into three parts, covering market, credit and operational risks. Detailed summaries of each chapter are given in the part introductions.

Market risks have been the subject of extensive research for many years, with option pricing and risk measurement being the main focus of theoretical and quantitative analysis. As market become more liquid and open, much data are available for this analysis. The net result is that huge progress has been made towards our understanding of market risks during the last two decades. We now view the Black-Scholes formula as only a crude approximation to reality in many cases and the same could be said of the standard "historical" statistical measures of risk. This has been a driving force behind a vast international research effort into better pricing models and better risk models.

The chapters in the first part of the book represent some of the most important recent contributions towards an advanced understanding of market risks. Each has been written by acknowledged experts in their field. Two chapters examine the pricing of options under more realistic assumptions for price processes, showing how they may be mispriced if traditional methods are used. Three of the chapters introduce new and more effective methods for measuring market risk. The last chapter focuses on model risk, which concerns both option pricing and risk management.

The second part of the book contains four chapters on credit risks. During the last few years there has been an enormous resurgence of interest in this area, driven in part by the imminent changes by regulators for credit risk requirements in the Basel 2 Accord. Many different theoretical models for pricing the risks of default have been proposed during the last few years, but data that are relevant for modeling credit default and credit migration are relatively difficult to obtain; consequently it is not yet clear which models perform best.

The first chapter in Part 2 provides a general framework for credit risk measurement by portfolio models. Portfolio models of credit risks are still at an early stage of development and more work is essential before credit VaR type models will be acceptable for the measurement of credit risk capital. The other three chapters focus on the estimation of default and migration probabilities and the pricing of credit risky products: new models for pricing collateralized bond obligations; an extensive and critical survey of the many different models for pricing default risk; and a clear explanation of the difference between real-world and risk-neutral default probabilities and the circumstances in which each should be applied.

The last part of the book is about "operational risk," a term that has become a catch-all for financial risks that are not market or credit risks. Last year it became clear that the Basel committee will introduce minimum capital requirements to cover operational risks in the Basel 2 amendment that is due for implementation in 2004. Naturally this has been a catalyst for an intense research effort into this area. However there are many different types of operational risks and they have quite diverse characteristics; consequently a rather wide variety of financial and mathematical models are currently under consideration. Several aspects of measuring and managing operational risks are surveyed in this book: the response to the proposed changes in regulations; the insurance and securitization of operational risks; the design of an operational risk system; and an introduction to Bayesian methods and how they may be applied to the measurement and management of operational risks.

This book brings together recent cutting-edge research in financial risk measurement and management by some of the leading experts in their field. A good begining

William Reed has tried to define and teach the meaning of KI so that we in the west can learn. The first part of the text helps us undersatnd KI, develop KI and pratcie KI. There are a series of excericses and a section on KI meditation. The second part of the text goes into KI development in the Japanese Arts (Shodo, Aikido, Kiatsu, Go, Noh and the Tea Ceremony). And the third part, Ki in our ever changing world. A must have book.

Like William Reed, I spent over 10 years in the Orient learning martials arts from men who had dedicated their life to the practice. This book ranks among the best written concerning ki. The ideas put forth are universal, and can be assimilated by a broad minded and discerning person. Enjoy this book, I certainly did and continue to do so everytime I pick up my copy.

What is "Anime"?

Stevie Suan contends that "Anime" share a particular aesthetic. And that's because he uses "Anime to mean (Japanese) animation with this particular aesthetic, generally regarded in Japan as 'nihon no anime,' with the word 'anime' itself connoting animation in general." (p. 323 and, slightly briefer, p. 20) He then proceeds to find parallels between Japanese theater and his "Anime", further narrowed down to a sample - which is neither representative nor random - from the "Action, Adventure, Science Fiction, Fantasy genres" (p. 21) from 1995 to 2010. (Quite a lot of "Evangelion" and, strangely, "Azumanga Daioh", but no "One Piece" or "Pok�mon", for example.)
In the same way, one could write a thesis that "Anime" is based on Western literature, simply by defining "Anime" as (Japanese) animation based on Western literature, and ignoring the rest. So, before you buy this pricey book, be aware that it is not about anime in general, but about a highly biased subset of Japanese animation. There are other problems with this book, as well as good or at least interesting points, but that would seem to me to be a fundamental one.

"This work (1st. ed., CH, Nov'00, 38-1584) became an immediate resource for this reviewer for both research and teaching purposes. In the multidisciplinary area of robotics, it is not uncommon to find textbooks that describe the algorithms involved in robotic control, perception, planning, etc., but fail to provide the reader with the critical details necessary for implementation. For the majority of topics, Dudek (McGill Univ., Canada) and Jenkin (York Univ., Canada) present the necessary math to perform the computation and in some cases also provide pseudocode. References are included throughout. The text really shines in its handling of algorithms for perception, sensor fusion, and path planning. The appendixes review probability, statistics, linear systems, filters, and Markov models, but not with enough depth to provide an introduction to someone new to any one of these topics. This work is a bit too advanced for an introductory course on robotics, but it would be a great resource for an intermediate or advanced course on mobile robotics."

Gregory Dudek is Professor of Computer Science and Director of the School of Computer Science at McGill University. He holds a James McGill Chair and is a member of the Center for Intelligent Machines, and has been co-author of over 150 refereed publications on robotics and computer vision.

A good and practical book

This books is divided into three main parts: locomotion, sensing, and reasoning. That is lots to cover in a smallish book. I think the writers did a good job paring downing the information. There is enough information in all the sections to give a hobbyist robot builder like myself something to work with. At the same time, the book doesn't get bogged down with implimentation details. Some of you might not like that, especially if you are looking for a how-to book. This book will give, for example, some ideas for wheel arrangements for a robot, and some math that could prove useful for programming and design. The book does NOT give details about how to program, or how to attach wheels, etc.
This book might be scary for the math-phobic, but those of you who skip over the math in books should still find this book useful. Readers with a year of Calculus and some Linear Algebra will have no problems.
There are lots of robot designs discussed with some helpful (thought poorly reproduced) photographs. There is a brief historical background to the robotics field, and some thoughts about what future developments are needed to really make mobile robots useful and flexible devices.
And finally, there is a very large bibliography, and a good index.

Good general overview of computational robotics

This is one of only two books that I know of that are dedicated to computational issues in robotics, the other one being "Introduction to Autonomous Mobile Robots". Both of these books are good and excel in certain areas. I think that this book's best chapters are the two on sensors and their algorithms. Both chapters have plenty of details and even some worked numerical examples. The first two chapters on locomotion and robot hardware are pretty good and do have some equations for deriving robot kinematics, but I think that the previously mentioned "Introduction to Autonomous Mobile Robots" does a slightly better job at presenting that material. Chapters 5 and 6 on "Representing and Reasoning About Space" and the "Operating Environment" are about AI and its uses in the mobile robot. They are an OK introduction, but to really understand this material it would be better to get a copy of "Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach", and read the relevant chapters in that book. The next two chapters on "Pose Maintenance" and "Maps and Related Tasks" are very good chapters. They go into some specifics on AI and robot design that I couldn't find in other books, and have quite a bit on the mathematics and algorithms involved. They go into particular detail on the Kalman Filter, but you will still need a more detailed source of information on that subject. I suggest "Poor Man's Explanation of Kalman Filtering: Or How I Stopped Worrying & Learned to Love Matrix Inversion", which is very inexpensive. If you can't find it on Amazon, you can try buying it directly from the publisher, Taygeta Scientific. The last two chapters are just essay-style material on the current and future uses of mobile robots.

To get the most out of this book you should already be familiar with statics, dynamics, image processing, computer vision, and the basics of AI. No book on robotics can take you from ground zero, teach you all of these subjects AND computational robotics too. The good books on robotics, of which this is one, show how all of the related disciplines are integrated into the design of a robot.

Comprehensive robotics text

The book is an excellent comprehensive survey of the mobile robotics, especially for a reader interested developing new mobile robot hardware and software. The authors discuss most of the major research issues in mobile robotics in depth, including locomotion and control, sensing and state estimation, and planning algorithms. Additionally, many of the most successful techniques are covered in enough depth to act as a how-to for implementors. For example, a popular state estimation technique is the Kalman filter, which can be readily implemented directly from the description of the algorithm in the text.
This book distinguishes itself in that it focuses on the algorithms, and general lessons learned in designing robots, both hardware and software. Many robotics books get involved in the details of hardware and become obsolete at a rapid pace. This book should be very useful for the university classroom for quite some time.

So-so

While there were some helpful and interesting techniques sprinkled throughout the book, a lot
of the so-called non-confrontational ploys sounded like empty appeasements to folks who wouldn't
be interested or willing to hear another side.
I think Gabor got a little side-tracked and his "assertive" techniques lacked some aggressive boundary setting
principles. A lot of his assertive techniques amounted to little more than insincere and disingenuous
flattery to try and soften up the difficult person. And a real tough customer will see right through
that garbage immediately and chew you up before you get started.
Much better to stress stating personal opinions and boundaries rather than tossing up fluffy, phony
compliments that you both know you even remotely mean in the futile hope the other guy will somehow all of a sudden decide to be someone he's not and consider your feelings or ideas. Pretty naive.
Not bad but not exceptional.
