Do not condemn this devotional without having read it: This book is a loving prayer to Mary, the Mother of God.
By Love Thy.Enemy
As hinted in the title, this devotional recounts the history of Mariology, but more substantially includes personal witness by the two authors of their own sincere and close and informed devotion to Mary, Mother of God.
The Reverend Father Edward Schillebeeckx began serving as seminary theology professor at the Catholic University in the Netherlands in the Fifties, continuing there, and in fact at the time of the writing of this booklet serving there as Professor Emeritus of Theology, with a long, respected, brilliant and prolific career as Catholic theologian in the Dominican Order of the great Catholic Theologian Saint Thomas Aquinas. Prior to serving at the Catholic University he had taught at the famous Dominican House of Studies in Louvain. having studied philosohy and theology at Louvain and received his Doctorate of Theology in Paris.
The Reverend Father Schillebeeckx served as Theological Adviser to the Second Vatican Council, giving groups of bishops instruction on the theological points they were considering for the Vatican Council Documents, and strongly influencing the processes and the production of that landmark Council, which strongly influenced in turn the later direction of his own theological meditations and investigations.
His contribution to this present volume therefore ably and succinctly recounts the history of Mariology from the early days of our Church through the Vatican Council and beyond, considering carefully as well the dogma of the Immaculate Conception declared in the century before the Council, and the Assumption, declared only a few years prior to the declaration of the Council by good Pope John XXIII.
More directly Father Schillebeeckx openly declares his own devotion to Mary, the evolution of that devotion, and how deeply and personally this is felt, experienced and expressed. We see here a truly Catholic and sincere Marian devotion which can only fill, complement, and inflame our own, and thus we must read his prophetic words with prayerful meditation, as lectio divina, if we are truly and completely to pray effectively through Mary, if we are truly and completely to become Catholics, practicing and praying.
This contribution from Father Schillebeeckx began as an enthusiastically and warmly received address to a group of fellow religious in 1990. The Reverend Father Schillebeeckx, as a Dominican, whose initials are OP (The Order of Preachers), is not only a remarkable theologian, writer, and teacher, but a gifted preacher, and thus the genesis of his article reprinted here in an excellent and competent translation by John Bowden, born as an oral testimony in Faith and confidence to a group of fellow Catholic religious meeting in symposium to reflect upon the History and Mystery of Mary.
Interesting for comparison is the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx's earlier well received Marian work: Mary Mother of the Redemption, available more economically at Mary, Mother of the Redemption. For a remarkable and powerful parallel Mariology please see as well Mary: Model of Justice (Reflections on the Magnificat).
The other contributor to this devotional literature is a fellow professor at the Catholic University, Professor Catharina Halkes, who similarly shares not only a personal testimony of her devotion to Mary, but also a professional theological examination of the Marian dogma, in this her article "Mary in my Life."
As she explains: "The account of my quest for the meaning of Mary for my faith and life falls into several parts. In the first part (I) I describe my personal experiences, feelings and emotions about the Mary of my youth, the ups and downs in my attitude to her image. In the second, longer part (II), . . .I go to work more studiously and at a number of points - though not completely - investigate what can be said theologically, ecclesiologically (relating to the doctrine of the Church) and in religious terms about Mary, both what has gone wrong in many interpretations and positive possibilities. In a subsequent short part (III) to end with I again become personal (p. 47)."
In hers as well as the good Father's sections, the most moving and meaningful sections are the personal. Certainly they are both theologians well trained in our Church, and respected professors of systematic theology, but their personal testimony of Faith reinforces and enlivens our own to greater depth and understanding and strength in our difficult, materialist, modern times. They both serve us therefore as strong allies in prayer, and wise guides along the way.
I am especially moved by Father Schillebeeckx's recounting of a personal prayer experience before an old Madonna hidden high upon a wall in a chapel in the Black Forest, a nearly iconic image in its piercing regard which looks more deeply and lovingly at us than we can look at it, as so many sacred images can do. As the Reverend Father Schillebeeckx recalls in his excellent treatise on THE EUCHARIST, the Cure d'Ars explained that at his long Adorations of the Blessed Sacrament "I look at Him and He looks at me."
This brief yet profound exploration and devotion to the place of Mary in our Church bears a brilliant yet brief and very useful Forward and Introduction by Marianne Merkx, which both usefully serve their purpose in setting this devotional work within the history of our Holy Mother Church as well as introducing us to the work and significance of the authors.
Ms. Merkx in fact concludes her forward by writing: "This book is written by Catholic theologians, but it is intended for anyone who is in search of, or fascinated by, the significance of Mary in the past and the present. The contributions invite not only study and discussion, but also profound reflection."
Before you therefore reflexively condemn out of hand this sincere and fine and orthodox devotional treatise for any reason, read the book, reflect, study and discuss, but most of all contemplate how this brief book bolsters your own Marian devotion, in practice, in your life, in your path to salvation and conversion, and in granting you charity with everyone whom you encounter in every way. You cannot judge a book by its cover. Read the book, and hear what Our Lady is saying to you today, and tomorrow.
