Excellent overview of a must-read Victorian sensation novelist
By David Morrell
Along with Wilkie Collins, Mary Elizabeth Braddon was a creator of what was known in the Victorian era as the Sensation Novel, an excellent definition of a thriller. This useful examination of Braddon's long, important career includes informative biographical and Victorian-culture sections. This is not a full-length biography. That's not a criticism. Instead the book uses a compendium, encylcopedic approach to Braddon and her work, approaching it from many different angles. As a Braddon enthusiast, I refer to this book often. (I'm a novelist, who became a Victorian scholar to write an imitation Victorian sensation novel, Murder as a Fine Art.)
