About the Author
Barry Libert is Chairman and CEO of OpenMatters and a Senior Fellow at the Wharton SEI Center for Advanced Studies in Management. Libert is also an angel investor, board member, and has been a business model and digital adviser to companies such as AT&T, Microsoft, GE Healthcare, Deloitte, ESPN, and Goldman Sachs.

Megan Beck is the Chief Insights Officer at OpenMatters, where she leads the firm’s investor and business research, publications, and curriculum initiatives. Similar to how mainframes transitioned to mini to PCs, Barry has taken a proven concept and boiled it down to easy to understand language that we all innately feel to be true. The book gave me plenty of information about drugs and the culture surrounding it, will apply the knowledge to my daily life and to help those I come in contact with when on the job. Information was great for my course work in school. Some chapters in the book were on real life experiences and they were very informative and gave me good insight.

School book. This one WAY worse than the other Sociology book, but the writing audience seems to be focused on more high school level than college. Very odd chapters within chapters and the whole book was poorly organized and written. Hard to read and follow!

Early in this memoir, Soyinka, the Nobel-winning playwright, says that he is "a closet glutton for tranquillity." The account that follows details a decidedly untranquil life of activism, imprisonment, and exile over the past half century. In 1956, as a Nigerian student in England, Soyinka considered joining the Hungarian uprising against the Soviets, thinking it a "perfect rehearsal" for future African insurgencies, but his father advised, "Kindly return home and make this your battlefield." The bulk of the book concerns Soyinka's struggles against one corrupt Lagos administration after another, shedding light on the outsize characters of African politics. Along the way, Soyinka recalls how once, in Venice, W. H. Auden tried to pass him off as an African prince, and reveals that, after winning the Nobel Prize, he came down with writer's block, "overwhelmed by the futility of everything I had ever done."

That Soyinka's story so closely aligns with the history of Nigeria testifies to his ongoing commitment to the cause of democracy, but the focus on politics leaves a few reviewers wishing for more of the personal stories found in Ak�, his first memoir, and The Man Died, about his two-year imprisonment. You Must Set Forth at Dawn is not always easy going, especially for those unfamiliar with African history. For those willing to take the journey, Soyinka's account breathes with the "fullness of an epic" (San Francisco Chronicle).

Captivating read!

This is my first taste of Soyinka's work, except for the few scenes of "The Lion and The Jewel" I gleaned many years ago.

I haven't read many autobiographies, but this is without question one of the best I have read. Solidly written, with a plethora of hilarious, as well as sobering anecdotes, and a masterful deployment of literary devices, this, surely is a chef-d'oeuvre. However, this book is not only an autobiography but an excellent historical account of Nigeria's political history since independence in 1960.

Catapulted right into the middle of the action and intrigue that took hold of the nation, I learned new things and gained a lot of useful insight into how the nation became to be what it is today and the various roles of those involved in shaping its destiny.

I grabbed this book because I wanted to learn more about the history of my country from the mouth of a seasoned literary figure. I was astounded to discover that he was completely involved in the struggle right from the beginning. What is more, I was rewarded with a distinctive literary style and all the rewards it brings - new vocabulary, new expressions, and more knowledge.

And I completely disagree with those who complain that Soyinka is too wordy and dawdles over many unnecessary details before getting to the real thing. What real thing are they searching for, anyway? This, after all, is a memoir. Moreover, every page, every word was an absolute treat.

Of course, I do not necessarily agree with all his ideologies, but his honest style through which he sometimes seems to contradict himself, is but a true reflection of how the human mind works.

Highly recommended, and you can be sure to be rewarded with far more than you intially expected at the end of this book.

Life, art and politics

Soyinka skilfully offers refreshing glimpses into his life as a humble, honest and courageous individual. He is deeply spiritual but definitely not a holier-than-thou prude. Soyinka's infectious enjoyment of life comes across in his passion for hunting, wine, music, art and, of course, women. It seems that it is this enduring appreciation of the immense possibilities of life that drives his resistance to dictatorship and systems that seek to rob the individual of the opportunity to partake in the sacrement of life. The man, his art and his politics are inseperable.

A must read for those interested in Nigerian history since independence

Mr. Soyinka, masterfully uses his life as a running commentary for the state of political affairs in Nigeria since 1960. While the book does speak on a lot of serious issues there are many moments of hilarity such as when W.H Auden passes him off as an African Prince and the quest to recover an acient mask that led Mr. Soyinka to Brazil.

Mr. Soyinka's style tends to be a little heavy on grammar but overall it is a great book, one that I am happy to have bought.

Kritek (chair, mental health nursing and management, Univ. of Texas Sch. of Nursing, Galveston) received a National Leadership Fellowship from the Kellogg Foundation in 1986 to study conflict resolution. That study gave birth to this "record of lessons from [her] life experiences at uneven tables," i.e., negotiations where one side has power over another. Including examples from her own experiences as the nondominant negotiator, Kritek intends to encourage dialog about "dominant power." Rather than offering practical methods for achieving equality, she suggests ten "ways of being" (e.g., "be a truth teller," "be innovative") to provide a philosophical context for nondominant negotiators to use when approaching uneven tables. Unfortunately, Kritek's penchant for rambling philosophical reflections leads to writing that is verbose, repetitive, and prone to digression and forces the reader to look hard for substance. Not recommended.

Negotiating at an Uneven Table has become a vital tool for my personal self actualization, professional communication, and daily growth. After reading this book, it is clear to see that most, if not all, tables are uneven. Regardless of which side of the table your on, Dr. Kritek provides tools for honest and successful negotiation. Her examples of the valleys and mountain top experiences and tables of life bring the actual events of life into a different and clearer perspective. Her words are honest and direct while being full of compassion. The chapter regarding manipulation has been espicially critical in assisting me identifing common techniques used by myself and others to control life. I strongly suggest this book for anyone sincerely interested in becoming a more honest, compassionate, and fullfilled person. Regardless of your profession, negotiation is a part of living and daily communication. Dr. Kritek provides a perspective to understand what is occouring and how to arrive at a win-win outcome. If winning is not an option, she helps to identify this reality and show you when to walk away.

This book is the single most helpful resource for assisting nurses to deal with interpersonal conflict that is inherent in their places of work today. It provides practical exercises interwoven with real nursing stories and occurrences that allow individuals to personalize their approaches to addressing conflict with others. It provides the reader with the opportunity to reframe conflict and conflict management in a way that allows for resolution. A great read!

A definite must have for schools and families.

As I have said previously, I am a sales rep for a major book publisher so I see a lot of books. I am certainly not afraid to tell you when my company sends out what I call a stinker. On the otherhand if we publish one I really like, I do not have a problem telling a school or library that they have to have a book.

This is a book that they should all have. It will appeal to students on a social level. It is wonderful teaching tool for teachers and parents alike. It does a wonderful job of being consistent on the rhyming text. Plus, it is just a real great story with really great pictures.

I ultimately judge a children's book by how often my child pulls the book out of the bookcase for me to read, and I can truly say that this is a book my two year old grabs almost every night.

Revolutionary monkeys, UNITE!

Echoing both Sombertown (from the stop motion classic Santa Claus Is Comin to Town) as well as Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927), Drabsville is a gray town filled with sad inhabitants.

Into this cold, unhappy world walks a suspiciously happy, guitar-playing, vest-wearing hippie named Chutney. Actually, much of the story follows the plot from First Blood. Like Rambo, Chutney finds an enemy of authority (the mayor, to Rambo's Sheriff Teasle) and is unfairly thrown into prison. The *seed* that Chutney illegally brings into Drabsville could easily be seen as allegorical marijuana. "Destroy that nasty weed!"

Upon his release, and with the mayor temporarily out of town, Chutney incites the masses. Surely another influence at this point was Reagan's "Tear down this wall!" speech. We see formerly morose chimps painting their homes pink(!) and turning the palace into a fruity playground. Nor is it a stretch to see the kiddie rocket ship as a decommissioned weapon of mass destruction.

Chutney soon has the entire town's population dancing in the streets. Everyone is eating copious quantities of food, no one is working anymore. Drabsville (now renamed Happytown, in the classic revolutionary tradition) has gone from dystopia to utopia.

Having successfully turned the guards against their master, Chutney has *him* thrown into jail. With the mayor under lock and key, Chutney completes the coup d'�tat by assuming the mayoral post. He lets the former mayor out of jail but only to rub his nose in the new world order. Power to the people! Or at least to the chimpanzees.

This children's book packs some heavy messages into its colorful pages. For children conditioned to equating chimps with Curious George, they may not pick up on every facet of the story without parental assistance. How much you clue them in is up to you.

Tricky Territory

It is a tricky thing to try to teach kids that authority is not always right and sometimes you have to stand up to it. This book strikes a perfect balance, with the main character being punished for doing something beautiful and for the common good but technically against the rules. When he ultimately wins out (with the help of some young chimps), rather than punishing the person who jailed him, he teaches him the error of his ways. A very thoughtful book, but one that won't be over the heads of the intended audience.

About the Author
Allen Dreibelbis has 30 years of experience in the IT Industry. He spent 16 years providing system integration and consulting services to public-sector clients while working for IBM. His expertise spans enterprise architecture, software development, complex systems integration, and Master Data Management. Allen currently is an Executive Architect in the IBM Software Group World-Wide Information Platform and Solutions Acceleration Team. He developed the Master Data Management Reference Architecture in 2006 while collaborating with colleagues across the IBM SWG Information Platform and Solutions organization and the IBM Information on Demand Center of Excellence. He provides customer briefings and training on the Master Data Management Reference Architecture and conducts architecture workshops for customers on implementing Master Data Management Solutions within their enterprises. Allen holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Pennsylvania State University.

Eberhard Hechler is a Senior Certified IT Architect (SCITA) and Executive IT Architect. He joined the IBM B�blingen Lab in Germany in 1983 as a junior programmer. Eberhard worked more than two years on an international assignment with the IBM Kingston Lab in New York, and he has worked on projects in software development, performance optimization and benchmarking, solution architecture and design, software product planning, management, technical consultancy, and technical alliance management. In 1992, Eberhard began to work with DB2� for MVS™, focusing on testing and performance measurements of new DB2 versions. Since 1999, his focus has been on Information Management and DB2 UDB on distributed platforms. He is currently the Technical Enablement Architect for IBM Information Platform & Solutions, working with System Integrators throughout Europe. Eberhard holds a M.S. in Mathematics (Diplom- Mathematiker) from Hamburg University.

Ivan Milman is a Senior Technical Staff Member at IBM, focusing on security and governance in the Information Management area within the IBM Software Group in Austin, Texas. Over the course of his career, Ivan has worked on a variety of distributed systems and security technology, including OS/2� Networking, DCE, IBM Global Sign-On, and Tivoli� Access Manager. Ivan has also represented IBM to standards bodies, including The Open Group and IETF. Prior to his current position, Ivan was the lead architect for the IBM Tivoli Access Manager family of security products. Ivan is a member of the IBM Security Architecture Board and the IBM Data Governance Council. Ivan is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional and a Master Inventor at IBM, and has been granted 12 U.S. patents.

Martin Oberhofer joined IBM in the IBM Silicon Valley Labs in the United States as a developer for database technology. After returning to Germany, he joined the IBM B�blingen Lab, from which he still works as a Technical Consultant and member of the World-Wide IBM Software Group Master Data Management Center of Excellence. His areas of expertise include database technologies, Java™ software development, MDM architecture, and IT systems integration. His special focus area is integrating MDM systems into the operational IT landscape by synchronizing and distributing master data with SAP application systems. He provides architecture workshops to customers and system integrators. He holds a M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Constance, Germany.

Paul van Run has almost 10 years experience in MDM and 15 years in IT. At DWL, he was part of the R&D leadership team developing DWL Customer, one of the first dedicated CDI products on the market. After the acquisition of DWL by IBM in 2005, he became a Senior Technical Staff Member, and he is responsible for the architecture of the IBM Master Data Management products: MDM Server (formerly WebSphere� Customer Center) and WebSphere Product Center, both market leaders in their segments. Before coming to DWL, Paul worked as a software developer in the insurance industry for an ING Group subsidiary in Canada. Paul holds a M.S. in Information Science from the Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and a M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Dan Wolfson is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and the chief architect and CTO for the Information Platform and Solutions segment of the IBM Information Management Division of the IBM Software Group. Very Good - Insightful and clear

This is a high quality piece on a complex domain that contains strong architectural advice that should be readily applicable to most environments. I bought the Kindle version and it is annoying that on books like this they dont provide copies of the drawings you can reuse. But very good content, and clear callouts of things to be mindful of.

It is however not a cookbook or Dummies guide - you have to have a need to get this deep into MDM which not a huge number of folks do.

Well Done; Comprehensive; Important!

Insights abound throughout this excellent and important book. For those seriously considering the efficacy of a comprehensive Master Data Management program in a modern enterprise, I would recommend this work. The authors do an excellent job of describing where Master Data Management fits in within a Services Oriented Architecture. And they also provide excellent technical guidance relative to integration and implementation. A minor, though necessary, criticism is that the book has a decided "IBM flavor" to it. This should be no surprise, as the book is published by IBM Press; and all of the authors are IBM employees. Nonetheless, the book is well written, well organized, comprehensive, excellent, and important. It is, in short, well worth the time, money, and effort; and the book does belong on the bookshelf of those truly committed to excellence in Enterprise Master Data Architecture.

Still the best MDM text in year-2010 marketplace

The best text on enterprise master data management (MDM) in the marketplace today. Other reviewers have commented that this work is "the Bible" of MDM, and this reviewer agrees with this assessment at a deeper level than acknowledging its near-600 pages of content. In addition to providing an introduction to MDM, the authors walk the reader through architecting solutions and provide industry examples at a level of detail not found anywhere else. As a consultant, one aspect of this book that this reviewer especially appreciated is its true vendor neutrality. It is not until Appendix B that the authors mention commercial products in this space, and although this appendix might help readers understand what might be purchased as commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software, it is quickly apparent that there has been a lot of movement over the last two years.

Admittedly, after reading this book for the first time, this reviewer understands why the authors recommend first reading chapter 1 ("Introducing Master Data Management") followed by chapter 3 ("MDM Reference Architecture") and chapter 9 ("MDM and Data Governance") in order to understand MDM, data governance, and how to implement MDM, but these chapters also contain long stretches of content sans diagrams that are often slowly drawn out, so reading chapters in order is recommended unless the reader is already knowledgeable about MDM and is looking for industry-specific examples, in which case chapter 6 ("PIM-MDM Solution Blueprints") and chapter 7 ("CDI-MDM Solution Blueprints") should be read, or the reader is looking to integrate MDM with other systems, in which case chapter 8 ("MDM Integration Blueprints") should be read, although chapter 8 has difficulty standing on its own and the reading of chapters 6 and 7 heavily relies on chapter 5 ("MDM Architecture Patterns").

The authors present well MDM and service-oriented architecture (SOA) theory and how MDM enables SOA, and this reviewer especially appreciated their presentation on patterns and industry examples. MDM architecture patterns are broken down into (1) "MDM Hub Patterns", (2) "Information Focused Application Integration", (3) "Process Focused Application Integration", and (4) "Enterprise Systems Deployment", which are further broken down into the following, respectively: (1) "Transaction Hub", "Coexistence Hub", and "Registry Hub", (2) "Initial Load" and "Information Synchronization", (3) "Transaction Interception", "Messaging", and "ESB", and (4) "MDM-DW Integration", "MDM-BI Analytical System Integration", "MDM-ERP Integration", and "MDM-CRM Integration".

The authors follow up their presentation on patterns by providing solution insight to New Product Introduction (NPI) for the consumer electronics industry, Global Data Synchronization (GDS) for the retail industry, and PIM-RFID for tracking and tracing product, as well as solutions to Master Patient Index (MPI) for the healthcare industry, Cross- and Up-Sell and Fraud and Theft for the banking and insurance industry, and Self-Service Website for the telecommunications industry. Along the way, the authors discuss business context, relevant business patterns, relationships between business patterns and architecture patterns, and provide dozens of diagrams that tie-in directly to the discussion, walking the reader through architecture components and the interactions between these components. Expect to spend some time reading through these examples. Well recommended text on MDM for a wide spectrum of reader needs from the high-level to the deep-dive, but be aware that data models, a critical aspect of MDM, are unfortunately not discussed.

Interesting projects that you can do with the Raspberry Pi

“Learning Raspberry Pi” by Samarth Shah is not the introductory book to the Raspberry Pi that you might think from the title. The book is meant for someone who already has some experience with the device and is looking to expand their knowledge of what’s possible. The book assumes that you have a model B Raspberry Pi and the special camera that was designed especially for the Raspberry Pi which you usually have to buy separately. Additional hardware is required to complete some of the exercises in the book.
The book begins by explaining how to set-up your Raspberry Pi and use New Out Of the Box Software (NOOBS) to load the Linux operating system on the device. Once this is done all sorts of wonderful things are possible! Each chapter in the book covers different projects that you can complete with your Raspberry Pi (usually some extra pieces of equipment).
The second chapter discusses how you can set-up a web server and create web pages with the Python computer language and Wordpress. By the end of the chapter you can have your own music station running from the Raspberry Pi.
The third chapter does a brief explanation of basic electronics and then helps you create your own digital clock and finally an actual alarm clock. This all requires extra parts that you would need to purchase separately. On a side note I got my Raspberry Pi in the form of a kit (many of which are available online) that came with several pieces of extra equipment including diodes, resistors, etc. Most of what you need for the clock is contained within that kit.
The fourth chapter covers robotics, one of my favorite aspects of having a Raspberry Pi. The projects in this chapter definitely require you to purchase extra equipment including the special Raspberry Pi camera. Three separate projects are created and then these three are combined together to make a robot. Lots of scripting in Python is required to make each part of the robot work.
The next chapter is about image processing and some of the amazing things that can be done with the camera and your Raspberry Pi. The OpenCV image processing software is used to let you manipulate pictures that you capture with the camera. You also learn how to take time-lapsed pictures and how to set-up a Twitter controlled camera.
Chapter six dives into software algorithms that can help with the image processing. Details are given on how to set-up facial recognition and even object tracking. So your Raspberry Pi can be set-up to be a surveillance camera of sorts. How cool is that?!! All of this takes patience and determination but is achievable with the details provided in the book.
The book ends with some tips for using the Raspberry Pi as well as help with common problems that can occur. Resources for more advanced projects are listed and author provides his email address so that you can tell him of any Raspberry Pi problems you may have.
This is a very interesting book and is great for someone who has completed a couple of projects from the Raspberry Pi website. Many hours of enjoyment and learning can be had from following the projects provided in this book.

I really liked the final chapter's collection of miscellaneous tips and tricks for dealing with common issues one might run into when working with a Raspberry Pi.

Although "Learning Raspberry Pi" does provide introductory coverage of these different technologies, it also goes into depth on some of the topics, particularly image processing. On many of the topics, the book provides just enough introductory information to get going on the subject and additional research might be warranted for deeper learning. There are several highly detailed projects that illustrate the covered concepts.

The images and screen snapshots in "Learning Raspberry Pi" are clear and helpful in understanding the concepts. The code listings are comprehensive and are black text on white background with no line numbers and no color syntax.

This book just takes you a bit further on what you can do with a Raspberry Pi. It is a great way to learn more and generate ideas on what to make with your Raspberry Pi. The subjects are chosen well and give a broad range of projects. Although the projects are simple they are good starting points for staring your own projects. Learning Raspberry Pi is a good book with lots of information to start experimenting even more with your Raspberry Pi.
