In Nightmare Island two Marines from a small South Carolina town land on Guadalcanal's Red Beach on August 7, 1942. They fight with Edson's Raiders on Bloody Ridge when it is attacked by an overwhelming Japanese force and go on the longest patrol behind enemy lines of the war with Carlson's Raiders. This is the story of how two men, one young enough to be the other's son, struggle to stay alive together in this vicious new war in the Pacific.

When one of them carves the first two notches on the grips of the 45 automatic given to him by his nine year old son to help him fight the Japanese, he is close to losing his life and very nearly his mind.

How does war without mercy change them? Will they both survive?

All but lost to history, Guadalcanal was the first combined land, sea and air victory of the war. Vicious, brutal and personal, it stopped the Japanese advance across the Pacific, changed the momentum of the war and gave hope to the people at home. Code named "Watchtower" it was Known as “Operation Shoestring” to those who were there. It lasted six brutal months during which the First Marine Division, sick, malnourished, shell shocked and battle fatigued, hung on by a thread through attack after attack from superior Japanese forces.

This is their story through the eyes of two fictional Marines who, with the rest of them, fought every day to stay alive.

Historical fiction with great history and very good fiction

This is an outstanding historical novel with the emphasis on the history more than the fiction. That said, the fictionalized part the book, centering on a middle-aged Marine cartographer and a 17-year-old sharpshooter, both from the same South Carolina town, doesn’t disappoint.

The history is even more captivating and evidences a huge amount of research on the part of the first time novelist. I have read a lot of WWII in the Pacific stuff, going back to Richard Tregaskis’s Guadalcanal Diary, probably the first war account that I ever read as a young teenager in the mid-1950s. From McClure’s book, I have learned a remarkable amount about this most important WWII land battle of 1942. I knew nothing about the naval Battle of Suva that happened as the first Marines were hitting the beaches of the Canal. Generals Vandergrist and Edson were merely names to me before reading of their crucial role during the entire Marine deployment of the battle.

There are a number of amazing set pieces in the book that I will long remember. One involves a flight of a plane carrying the protagonist to the Island in which, to escape marauding Zeros, the pilot took refuge in a huge thunderstorm. They escape but not without a near-death confrontation with the elements. Another involves a description of the aftermath of one of the early encounters of the Marines and a contingent of Japanese on an invasion beach. It is truly harrowing.

My one complaint about the Kindle version of the book is that it lacks maps. I would love to be able to see the locations of the multiple naval battles, the crucial airstrip, the “Slot,” etc. I understand that the hard copy will have those maps.

Word has it that there are more books coming from this fine author. I anxiously await their release.

Personal and military and social history meld for an engrossing read.

A gripping telling of the personal story of a son of a once privilged Southern family thats falken on hard times. Good character development lends immediacy to the skillfully woven-in saga of Guadalcanal and the deserted and abandoned Marines who held on and prevailed against overwhelming odds reversing what had been the inevitable seeming domination of the Japanese War Machine. Shifting points of view make a complex human and military understandable and palpable for the contemporary reader. But wait! There's more to come in the remaiming two volumes of this trillogy.

Excellent read!

While I had trouble with the violence, I had to give it a 5-star rating because it was so well-written and beautifully researched. Mr. McClure's vocabulary is astounding and his writing style interesting and most informative. I could not put the book down until I was finished. I understood that the level of violence was necessary to the story because after all this was a horrific war, and no amount of sugar coating could change that. I personally have a hard time reading violence even when it's true, but this book was so good I had to keep going!

About the Author

Anthony Williams is a UK-based developer and consultant with many years experience in C++. He has been an active member of the BSI C++ Standards Panel since 2001, and is author or coauthor of many of the C++ Standards Committee papers that led up to the inclusion of the thread library in the new C++ Standard, known as C++11 or C++0x. He has been the maintainer of the Boost Thread library since 2006, and is the developer of the just::thread implementation of the C++11 thread library from Just Software Solutions Ltd. Anthony lives in the far west of Cornwall, England.

Outstanding!

I just finished reading this book--twice! The second half requires careful study to get the most out of it. This is really an OUTSTANDING piece of work. The writing is clear and all the code examples are precisely to the point. Virtually zero fluff in this entire book. You can only imagine how much work he put into designing and debugging the programs so that they are so clean. Well, I didn't notice any bugs in the code, but I didn't try to run them yet and his narrative shows that his attention to detail goes way beyond a quick code review.
Here are the things I liked most about this book: 1) it thoroughly uses C++11 features, including std::move, etc. 2) it's comphrehensive coverage of threading; and 3) it includes code and design discussion for a complete thread pool.
In my opinion there are only a few shortcomings: 1) The discussions of packaged_task, promise, spinlock, and fences/barries wasn't elaborate enough to help me really learn when/where to use these tools. Futures and async were covered thoroughly, but not these other topics. There was comment about spinlock unblocking the current thread that I didn't understand.
2) There are many places where the author/editor could have tied more narrative to the bullets in the code. That's a nifty feature of this book series, and it worked very well in this book, except that in some places it should have been done more. A couple of tricky lines of code had no comment, e.g. how the handle() function works in the message passing example. The chaining syntax is unusual and needs more explanation.
3) spinlock, and a few other topics, are not in the index.
4) It would be very helpful to see a brief example program that would report the relative performance of an analogous data structure class from the lock-based chapter vs. the lock-free chapter. This would give the reader a glimpse as to when the added complexity pays off.

This is a useful book for me because this is the first book ...

This is a useful book for me because this is the first book I found on the new C++ Threads that came in the new C++ standard.
This book is a mixture of "tutorial" and "reference" manual as in:
The author sometimes introduces items before they are explained so you may have to skip around a bit to work through the discussions.
This is NOT a book to learn about C++11.
You will have to navigate a fair number of those new C++11 features in this book. This can be distracting but probably should be expected since this is part of the whole C++11 package.

Overall this is a useful reference book. I haven't found another book on the subject to compare it to. For the time being I give it 4 stars.

Best Multithreading Programming Book Using C++11

There are quite a lot of books covering C++ multithreading programming books which ranges from posix thread programming to Win32 programming. However, there are few books that cover the concurrency and thread programming as in C++11 standard. In addition, the author himself is a contributor to this part of C++11 standard.

That said, it doesn't qualify the book as best automatically. The real reason for that I think is the examples are very clearly explained in the book and the framework used in the book seem to be very adaptable to your real-world project easily. In that sense, it is really a practical multithreading programming book.

One caveat though: This book would not teach C++ programming and not even C++11 even if you have some fine grasp of C++. I recommend you get hold of The C++ Programming Language (B. Stroustrup, 4th Edition) or C++ Primer (S. Lippman etc., 5th Edition). The book itself may need some clarification in some place, for example, it should really talk about using -lpthread for linking since it discusses various compilers for C++11 anyway. However, given the aforementioned need of a C++11 text to accompany it, I would still rank this book a 5-star as those minor problems could be figured out easily given books above or you can easily find answers from stackoverflow.com etc.

ANOTHER AWSOME PROJECT BY STUART H. JAMES

Another great text. James involves numerous other experts to bring the whole project together. An especially fantastic chapter by Paul Erwin Kish on case evaluation and report writing. A great case law appendix for both the state and federal levels. A very interesting appendix from Paul Leland Kirk. I could comment positively on each and every chapter. Just fantastic all around ! Another pleasure to read. KEEP THEM COMING !!!

Additional topics are presented to prepare readers for further study in holomorphic methods in low-dimensional topology, especially Heegaard Floer homology. The book could serve as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate or part of a graduate course in knot theory. Standard background material is sketched in the text and the appendices.

I've been reading the latest book on NLP, penned in part by the co-founder of NLP, Dr Richard Bandler. The book is called The Ultimate Introduction NLP and is sub-titled How to Build a Successful Life. It is co-authored by NLP Master Trainers Owen Fitzpatrick and Alessio Roberti.

It's the story of a man named Joe who attends a one-day introductory course given by Dr Bandler. Joe joins the other participants who are attending the course and learns with them how to apply the techniques in their personal and professional lives.

When you read the book you too become a participant on the course, in that you see what the others see, hear what they hear and learn what they learn. Dr Bandler's lectures are interspersed with the observations, thoughts and insights of Joe and the other participants.

Dr Bandler explains NLP in a memorable, humorous and engaging manner. I've read a lot of his work but I found some original material in this book. His way of teaching is direct and very accessible, making what can seem like difficult concepts easy to absorb and put into practice.

Among the techniques covered in this book are:
* Getting rid of bad memories
* Triggering a positive feeling with the skill of anchoring
* Amplifying positive feelings
* Eliminating negative feelings
* Building a better future

You will also learn about the power of non-verbal communication and how to ask powerful questions. But, above all, you will get useful insights into getting over the things that may be holding you back - phobias, bad habits, learning disorders and other drawbacks.

NLP - The Most Expensive Solution - Only for Professionals.

The book is well written and the exercises described during the seminar seem to work. This is a good introduction to NLP. Don't expect more than that because to actually learn NLP you will need to take several very expensive courses. NLP is really geared for the professional and not for someone looking to improve their life, career, finances, etc. The only way NLP can help you do that is if you take all the training yourself or you pay a certified practitioner or master practitioner and have them assist you in making the changes. Tony Robbins has been making a fortune with NLP(NAC) tools and he paid a hefty price to learn them. If you are interested in finding out a bit about NLP this book can help. If you are interested in actually learning NLP - you can find home study courses, with no support, starting at about $2,000.00. There are far less expensive or complex ways to make personal changes. NLP is geared and taught for professionals or an elite group of practitioners. NLP can only be learned by actually experiencing the exercises during a live training and continuously practicing what has been learned. Richard Bandler is releasing a prequel to this book (Feb. 2015). I didn't think you could get more basic than what he has done with the Ultimate Introduction to NLP. This book is an enjoyable read, but there is not much here in the way of usable NLP. Try Unlimited Power or NLP the New Technology. You will get more value for your time and money.

Short, Sweet, and Unique Introduction

This is a short (141pp.) introduction to neurolinguistic programming (NLP). NLP, in my opinion, is essentially a basket of diverse, practical psychological tools for self-improvement and helping others. Some of these tools are meditation, hypnosis, Pavlovian conditioning, and ways to better listen to and communicate with others. As the name suggests, this basket is normally held together by an extensive net of high-falutin' jargon. For instance, Pavlovian conditioning is called "anchoring." Asking specific interrogative questions is "meta-modeling."

This book is written by one of NLP's co-founders and two acolytes. While an introduction, it may well clarify some areas for people already familiar with NLP. I have read a number of NLP books and found this one unique and unusually readable.

This book is readable in that it is set up as a story involving several people going to one of the author's seminars and shows them practicing the techniques, having questions, and applying the techniques to their lives. This makes the concepts more comprehensible than in a straight-up explanatory book. Especially helpful are the last two chapters (18pp.) which beautifully summarize and reinforce the book's key points.

It is unique in that it explains what NLP does without the mind-numbing extensive jargon of most NLP books. Still, the main elements of the jargon are there, but so easily and naturally defined and explained that this book might be helpful for those with more experience, and confusion, with NLP.

One warning: to get the most out of NLP you need to develop your powers of visualization, both for sound and feeling as well as sight. Some of NLP's elements may sound goofy, and are regularly attacked by establishment psychologists. But NLP has a lot of loyal followers, so why not try some of its techniques? This book is a good start.

Why only 4 stars? The book is short and at the end advertises Bandler's "products" to an extent I find annoying.
